The Committee on Mass Wedding in Gombe State on Tuesday said it had commenced screening of 3,000 applicants for the second batch of the exercise.

Abdulkadir Abubakar, the Publicity Secretary of the Committee and Senior District Head of Gombe, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency (NAN) in Gombe.

Mr. Abubakar said the committee, which had different sub-committees, was mandated to screen applicants for pregnancy, HIV/AIDS and Hepatitis, among other cases.

He commended the state government for introducing the programme, which was meant to assist the less privileged to get married.

According to him, the scheme will reduce the spread HIV/AIDs in the state.

He said the committee had consulted traditional rulers and other stakeholders to ensure success of the exercise.
The spokesman said application forms for the programme had been distributed to 11 local government areas of the state as it was done in the first batch of the initiative.

He said successful applicants would be provided with dowry, foodstuff, clothing, furniture and kitchen utensils.
NAN reports that 720 couples were married out across the state under the first batch of the programme in April.
They include 612 Muslim divorcees (Zawarawa), 76 Muslim Spinsters and 32 non-Muslims.

  • Buhari the Sharia Virus

Sharia is a disaster! What is the economic benefit to the masses? What has government got to do with marriage? Another Almagiri(boko-Haram) in the making.

Our problem is not GEJ but Sharia Virus. Sharia virus had kill more people than Ebola and corruption combined. Sharia virus has been killing non-Muslims in Nigeria right from the days of Usman Dan fodio. Up til date the Northern Muslims are yet to develop a vaccine for Sharia virus.

What are Northern Muslims doing to rescue Chibok girls from Sharia advocates (Boko-Haram)? Chibok girls are victims of Sharia law and Islam. Northern Muslims adopted Prophet Mohammed’s law(Sharia) as against Nigeria constitution.

Prophet Mohammed is in charge of Sharia law not GEJ. According to Northern Muslims, Sharia law is superior to Nigeria constitution. Thus, Northern Muslims should seek help from Prophet Mohammed not GEJ. GEJ have no power under sharia law but Nigeria constitution.

STOP THE SPREAD OF SHARIA VIRUS BY NOT VOTING FOR BUHARI. Buhari is an advocate of Sharia.

    Say No to Sharia rule.

GMB did not start Sharia… your campaign of calumny has no substance…. what you are saying on the contrary is that Nigerians should not vote him because he is going to stamp our corruption of which your principal is a primary victim.

This is an excellent rebuttal. I suspected the originating report to be false because those of us living in Jigawa know Sule Lamido did what nobody before him had done to totally turn around the fortunes of the state. It’s high time journalists start encouraging our leaders who, though they may have made some mistakes, are the very best that we have had. Sule had done his best. But he shall expect more and more persecution because he was perceived as too outspoken and arrogant, and because he refused to decamp to the APC when Buhari and Bola Tinubu begged him to do so. After all, why are they harassing Kwankwaso or Wamakko, both of who plundered their respective states and left hundreds of billions of Naira in callous indebtedness? Premium Times is a very credible newspaper. But it has to be careful so as some of its staff could not be used by unscrupulous politicians to seek to destroy their opponents
