Adamawa: We’ll ensure open, fair primaries in APC – Atiku

A former Vice President and chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Atiku Abubakar, has said the party would ensure an open and fair contest among all its members vying for the party’s ticket ahead of the forthcoming governorship election in the state.

The governorship seat of the state became vacant following last month’s impeachment of the former state governor, Murtala Nyako.

Mr. Nyako was a member of the APC before his removal.

The former Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Umar Fintiri, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, is the acting governor.

Mr. Abubakar told journalists at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, on Tuesday that it was important that the APC made the Adamawa election a case study in political transparency through effective application of the party’s internal democracy mechanism before, during and post-election.

He said that the APC was the party to beat in Adamawa State. He also noted that all the contenders for the party’s ticket were his political allies, adding that it was imperative on him as a democrat and law abiding party man and leader to remain neutral in the primaries and allow due process to be followed.

“The culture of imposition of candidates and its concomitant impunity is now old fashioned and unacceptable in our democracy. You may recall that I have been in the vanguard of safeguarding true democracy by challenging obstacles to justice and fair-play in the past. I even went to court severally to protect our hard-won political freedom. I will continue to lead with others in the race to unseat this inept and incompetent PDP maladministration which has thrown Nigerians into an era of depression, frustration and desperation,” he said.

On the dismissal of the impeachment plot against Governor Tanko Al-Makura of Nasarawa State by the panel constituted by the state’s Chief Judge, the former Vice President said this was a real life vindication of the APC as a party of the people that creates and cherishes good governance.

“The era where a political super power will arbitrarily use impeachment as a mechanism to get rid of political opposition is over,” he said.

    Long live Turakin Adamawa !!!

  • Norah

Atiku remains the only agent to rescue people from the
present tyranny of PDP administration particularly in Adamawa State.

    • peter

      your a joking right ?

  • Mr. Abdin

Atiku Abubakar the former Vice President of the Federal Republic of
Nigeria the fighter and the protector of democracy in Nigeria as you
have said,”The era for the imposition of candidate is over, also the era
where a political super will arbitrarily use impeachment as a mechanism
to get rid of opposition is over”. That is why with your type in the
polity, the political environment is always interesting, you remain a
political gladiator that cannot be easily pushed away. And as for
Adamawa State elections APC remain the party to beat since it has a lot
of acceptance from the nooks and crannies of the state. Victory is really assured. Carry on Turaki you are too much.

  • Esther

True talk Turaki; Politicians must stop imposing leaders on the people, let prospective leaders sell themselves and their vision to the people to decide. However, fair chance most be given to all governorship aspirant to compete, that is the only way the party can produce a credible and capable candidate.
APC!! Set the pace for others to emulate.

    • peter

APC impose leaders more on people than any outfit. look at their National chairman.

  • usman ahmed

But the Atiku that look like a savior to everyone now, was he not part of the corrupt PDP for over a decade ? why has he become a saint all of a sudden ? Or Nigerians just have a problem with PDP that any opposition is a savior.

  • Zirem

There! A true democrat speaking, being a major player in the country’s political scene Atiku continues in his quest for the realization of a true democracy in Nigeria. Thumbs up, Turakin Adamawa

  • john micheals

This is a party that a National Chairman in Mr John Oyegun was imposed as the leader against the wish of many of the stake holders in the party. Any one that thinks APC is a party to be taken seriously is not being realistic. They are made up of former PDP leaders that we have all criticized and they turn a new leaf overnight ?

  • peter

Atiku can not win an election in Nigeria, He had corruption cases against him during his spell under OBJ.

  • peter

he is not even the most popular in the APC, what about Gen Buhari ? the party have too much internal rumbles to succeed.
