Inadequate electoral materials, ballot box snatching, underage voting characterise Plateau local government elections

Voters on queue...

Results were collated despite the absence of electoral materials.

The local government elections in Plateau State were characterised by inadequate electoral materials, ballot box snatching, and under-age voting in some of the local governments.

In Bokkos, elections could not hold in Horop A and B wards, the polling unit of the senator representing Plateau Central at the National Assembly, Joshua Dariye.‬

‪Mr. Dariye, speaking to journalists in Bokkos, said he had lost confidence in the entire electoral process. He also disclosed that he had lodged a formal complaint with the Plateau State Electoral Commission, PLASIEC, in Jos.‬

‪”I do not think the elections will be free and fair; there are inadequate electoral materials,” he said.

‪In Quan-Pan,  there were reported cases of ballot box snatching and destruction by thugs.‬

‪The All Progressive Congress, APC, chairmanship candidate of the local council, Chindo Dafat, said apart from the snatching of ballot boxes, elections were not held in some polling units, yet results were collated.‬

‪”My polling unit was totally omitted alongside that of my deputy while in some wards voting was done without accreditation,” he said.

‬In Kanada 2 polling unit in Jos South, PREMIUM TIMES witnessed underage voting by kids believed to be within the ages of 10-13.

The children were seen on queues, already accredited to vote.‬

‪One of the under-aged voters, Benjamin Pam, who confirmed to PREMIUM TIMES that he turned 13 in December 2013, said he was using the voter’s card of a relation who was away.

Pam, however, said he had never voted before Tuesday’s council polls.
