Belgore said APC is disintegrating
The Kwara State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress, APC, has dismissed the statement credited to Dele Belgore, a former stalwart of the party, that the APC will soon disintegrate. The party said the statement is an unrealistic wish informed by self-centeredness and political naiveté.
Mr. Belgore, the governorship candidate of the defunct Action Congress of Nigerian, ACN, in Kwara State during the 2011 election had, last week, announced his defection from the APC to the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.
The Kwara APC, in a statement by its spokesperson, Sulyman Buhari, on Sunday said the long-suffering of Nigerians and misrule of the PDP-led Federal government were reasons why the APC was in existence. He dismissed Mr. Belgore’s claim as unfounded.
“Relentlessly, we shall ensure purposeful leadership and better quality of life for Nigerians,” Mr. Buhari said.
The statement said Mr. Belgore could not claim to know the PDP more than the governors and some of the founding fathers who defected from the ruling party because of its undemocratic practices and mismanagement of the country.
“Nigerians need to know that Mr. Belgore is not a member of PDP today due to assumed undemocratic tendencies in APC but for the resolve of our party to disengage all selfish interests including his. The question arise: Is he the only leader of the legacy parties? Why is he alone on the allegation of undemocratic tendencies in Kwara APC? He failed to see patriotic needs to relinquish personal interests and join other Nigerians to collectively salvage Nigeria from the PDP having destroyed and divided the country across different ethnic and religious folds,” the statement said.
It also said it was illogical for Mr. Belgore to think he could secure the freedom of Kwarans under PDP. “Kwarans are free – the acceptability of the just concluded APC membership registration is an attestation,” it said.
The statement quoted Mr. Belgore as saying in an interview published by The Punch on 16 March, 2013 that “APC is about putting the country first, President Jonathan lacks ability to solve Nigeria’s problems and PDP has destroyed the country through abuse of power, intimidation and unholy alliances with institutions that should check it.”
Mr. Belgore was an APC member at the time of making the statement.
The APC said it was assuring its members and supporters that the movement of Mr. Belgore from the defunct ACN to the PDP had no alteration on the election winning machinery of APC as presently constituted in Kwara State.
