The last time council elections were held in Plateau was 2008
The Plateau State Independent Electoral Commission (PLASIC) has again postponed the local government elections in the state.
The elections were initially fixed for December 7, 2013. They were postponed to January 21, and later to January 30.
On Thursday, the elections were again postponed to February 25.
The recent postponement was contained in a statement signed by the Executive Chairman of the commission, Peter Dalyop, and made available to journalists in Jos.
“PLASIC wishes to inform Political Parties participating in the forthcoming Local Government Elections and their candidates that the date of the election has been shifted from 30th January 2014 to 25th February 2014,” the commission said. “The shift was occasioned by unexpected difficulties encountered in the production of critical election materials by the producer which is taking more time than initially allocated.”
The commission appealed “to participants in the elections and general public for understanding and cooperation for us to work together to achieve the desire goals.
”Consequently upon the shift, the remaining activities on the election time table hereby accordingly adjusted in line with PLASIC Law, 2013.”
The last time local government elections were held in Plateau was on November 28, 2008. The election then is believed to be the one of the major causes of violence in the state.
