Governor Aliyu alleges plot to destabilize Niger

Mr. Aliyu says the opposition is trying to destabilise the state.

The Niger State Governor, Babangida Aliyu, on Wednesday cried foul over an alleged plot by some notable figures to destabilize the state, in the wake of the ban on the operations of commercial motorcycles popularly known as Okada.

In a statement made available to reporters on Thursday, Mr. Aliyu’s spokesperson, Danladi Ndayebo, said the plot is being hatched by some highly placed individuals in the state, including the opposition.

Mr. Ndayebo said that a protest is being organized by a group of key figures in the state. He said that the impending mass action is aimed at pitching the people against the government.

The spokesperson said the Niger Government is astounded at how petty some disgruntled politicians can sink by employing irresponsible tricks to create the impression that things are not working.

“ The government of Niger State condemns this cheap blackmail being used by the these disgruntled politicians who have lost out of the power game and are clutching at anything, including mere straws to remain relevant,” it said.

Mr. Ndayebo said the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, government in the state acted responsibly and in the overriding interest of the public in banning the operation of commercial motorcyclists in the state capital, stressing that his administration will not repeal the law banning the use of Okada in the state capital.

He said he was convinced that the advantages of the newly introduced tricycles far outweigh those of motorcycles popularly called Okada.

He said that no responsible government would sit and watch its citizens die in avoidable road crashes involving commercial motorcyclists.

“There is no need to politicize the issues on ground, because innocent Nigerlites, irrespective of their party affiliation, suffer greatly, with some, even losing their lives, often times when accidents involving motorcycles occur,” Mr. Ndayebo said in the statement.

He said in due time, the people of Niger State will understand that the opposition is full of deceit.
