The Gombe governor said he declared a state of emergency in education.
Governor Ibrahim Dankwambo of Gombe State says that the percentage of out-of-school children in the state has dropped from 78 per cent in 2011 to less than 42 per cent in 2013.
Mr. Dankwambo said this when the Minister of State for Education, Nyeson Wike, visited him on Tuesday in Gombe.
The governor recalled that the statistics of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in 2011 showed that 78 per cent of children in the state were out-of-school.
“But between 2012 and 2013, the number has dropped to less than 42 per cent.
“A state of emergency was declared in the education sector, as the government built and renovated schools to decongest the existing ones, while recruiting qualified teachers. This has contributed effectively to the development of education in the state.
“We will not relent in our efforts; we will continue to invest in education because it is our number one, two and three priorities. If a society is well-educated, other things will follow,” he said.
Mr. Dankwambo, however, thanked the Federal Ministry of Education for allocating an additional “almajiri’’ school to the state.
Mr. Wike said that he was in Gombe to attend the 10th Quarterly Meeting of the Universal Basic Education (UBEC).
The minister commended Mr. Dankwambo for the massive construction and renovation of schools in the state.
“I must commend you because you have achieved a lot in spite of the little resources you receive from the Federation Account,” he said.
