A deadly riot broke out Monday in Numan prison in Adamawa state over an allegation that prison officials killed one inmate who attempted to escape.
Scores of inmates were injured in the unrest that involved over 250 prisoners.
Residents of the area say the inmates went wild when the prison warders beat one of the inmates to stupor on allegation he was attempting escape. He died early Monday.
The inmates then went on rampage and pounced on the prison officials which resulting to a serious fracas within the facility.
‘’In the process one of the prison warders has sustained grievous bodily injuries and was rushed to Numan General Hospital,” Pwapwadi Ngurigon, a resident said.
‘’Immediately a team of anti-riot police and soldiers were hurriedly deploy to comb the prison vicinity. We heard the inmates shouting on the top of their voices, smashing prison utensils.”
A prison source said the dead prisoner had on Sunday night attempted to jump-out but was later recaptured.
The prison authorities denied the allegation.
The Controller of Prisons in Adamawa, Ekijere Aken Shidi, said normalcy had been restored.
According to him, the melee broke on Sunday night when over 200 inmate overpowered the prison officials on duty and took charge of the prison before reinforcement was sent to help restore law and order.
They inmates reportedly set fire on equipment including generator set of the prison.
“They stoned my men, they burn down generation and destroyed many documents .What happened was that a prisoner attempted to escape through toilet. In the process of jumping the fence, he fell on toilet slap before he was rushed to hospital and the other intimate overpowered the officers on Job, Mr Shidi said.
‘’We called on other security to assist us and after which he was taken to hospital where he was confirmed that he is dead.”
