There was a heavy downpour on Friday.
The residents of Agwan Suya in Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State are still counting their losses several hours after a heavy downpour on Friday. The rains, which started in the afternoon, lasted for close to four hours.
A family reported their 11-year-old son missing on Saturday. The child had not been found since after the resulting flood from the rains on Friday.
A resident of the area, Peter Omogie, said his children’s room was completely washed away with three of his children escaping by mere whiskers. He added that the entire content of the room including electronics and clothes were lost to the flood. However, he expressed his gratitude to God that none of his family members lost their lives.
The Omogies home was situated close to a water channel that led to a stream and was among tens of houses affected by the flood.
Confirming the incident, the executive secretary of the State Emergency Management Agency, SEMA, Alhasan Barde, said the agency was aware of the incident but was yet to receive accurate statistics on the havoc caused by the flood. He, however, said that preliminary investigations have revealed that no life was lost in the flood but property worth thousands of naira were destroyed.
He appealed to house owners to avoid building houses on water ways.
The Plateau State Government had, severally, at the beginning of this year’s raining season, through public service announcements on state owned media, appealed to residents living on waterways to relocate to the hinterlands to avoid possible floods.
