Breaking News: Nassarawa Governor, Al-Makura, dissolves cabinet

Umaru Tanko Al Makura, Nasarawa State Governor

Nasarawa lawmakers summon Al-Makura over non-implementation of resolutions

The PDP filled House of Assembly moves to clamp down on Governor Al-Makura of Nasarawa state.

The Nasarawa State House of Assembly has summoned the state governor, Umaru Al-Makura, to appear before it on Tuesday, August 27, for allegedly flouting the resolutions of the assembly.

While Mr. Al-Makura is a member of the newly registered All progressives Congress, APC, the Assembly is dominated by the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP. The Assembly, consisting of 19 PDP members and five APC members, also overrode the governor on two bills.

The governor’s summon was issued 48 hours to the maiden meeting of APC governors in Lafia, the Nasarawa capital, on August 14; causing some to read politics into the lawmakers’ summon.

The bills which the house overrode include a law to regulate the activities of traditional rulers in Nasarawa state and a bill to establish Nasarawa state rehabilitation board.

The traditional ruler’s regulation bill is believed to be targeted at the elder brother of the governor, Ahmadu Al-Makura, who is the Emir of Kwandere, but mostly resides in Lafia, the state capital.

One of the resolutions the lawmakers want to question Mr. Al-Makura on is that directing him to reinstate the management of the state university, Keffi, led by Shamsudeen Omale, who was sacked by the governor in February.

The Assembly also directed the freezing of the accounts of the state transport agency after Mr. Al-Makura’s refusal to re-instate the staff of the agency and those of the state owned newspaper, Nigerian Newsday.

The lawmakers also summoned the Special Adviser to the Governor on Inter-party Affairs, Hajara Danyaro, to appear on Wednesday to give explanation on the details of a radio programme where she allegedly stated that the lawmakers were paid N300 million leave grant by the governor.

While speaking on the floor of the assembly, the member representing Keana constituency, Francis Orogu, said that the governor’s actions amount to disrespect for the lawmakers. He supported the motion for the invitation of the governor before the house.

Two members of the All Progressive congress, APC, present at the sitting- Tanko Tunga from Awe North constituency and Othman Bala from Keffi East- agreed with the fellow lawmakers and frowned at Mr. Al-Makura’s disrespect for the assembly’s resolutions.
