Committee plans pay rise for Nigeria Police, says Osayande

Normalcy returns to Lafia after police killings

The state government compensated the families of the victims.

Normalcy has returned to Lafia after the tension that greeted the town following the killing of some policemen by a militia group at Alakyo Village, near Lafia, on May 7.

Residents of the state capital had expressed satisfaction with the steps taken by the state government and the Nigeria Police to put the situation under control.

The state government had donated N1 million to each of the widows of the deceased policemen as part of efforts to control the situation.

Also, the Force Welfare Officer, DCP Abiodun Ige, relocated to Lafia to coordinate welfare-related issues concerning the families of the late officers, including the payment of benefits and other entitlement.

The Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) in charge of Zone 4, comprising Benue, Nasarawa and Plateau, Mike Zuokumor, had also relocated to the state.

Many residents of the town have reacted to the sad event, calling for the end to the killing of public officials in the discharge of their duties.

Gideon Adeleke, a resident and private tutor, urged the state government and the Nigeria Police to take necessary steps to avoid a repeat of the incident.

“We are happy with the steps taken. The government acted very fast and it helped. As you can see, Lafia is calm and peaceful.

“But the state government and security agencies should take additional measures to prevent the sad event in the future.”

Samaila Adamu, a resident of Lafia who bemoaned the loss, said people were not happy about the murder.

Another resident, Mohammed Bello, described the killing of the policemen as “unfortunate and sad”.

“There is lack of understanding. Let them understand each other because without understanding, there may be no peace and without peace, nothing will progress,” he said.

Yakubu Sanni, a worker of Perfect Stone Quarry, called on the government to provide adequate assistance to security outfits to enable them to discharge their duties.
