The NSCDC says it is cracking down on vandals in Benue State.
The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, in Benue said on Tuesday that it arrested 55 vandals in January.
The State Commandant of the Corps, Steven Lar, made this known in an interview in Makurdi, the state capital.
Mr. Lar said that the command also has no fewer than 25 cases against the vandals pending in court.
The commandant said the officers and men of the command were deployed to various wards and units of the state to ensure effective surveillance of facilities in the state.
He explained that the command has devised strategies of securing NNPC pipelines between Benue and its boundary with Enugu with the detailing of 30 officers to the area.
He said vandalism has dropped significantly in the state and blamed most of the cases of vandalism on staff of the affected parastatal agencies.
“If you see somebody vandalising NEPA cables, it must be somebody who has the knowledge about electricity.
“Most of these acts of vandalism are being done by professional and people who are supposed to be in custody of the properties,” Mr. Lar said.
He noted that suspected vandals of NITEL cables had in the past been arrested by his men but claimed to be staff on official assignment taking the facilities to different location.
Mr. Lar warned that anyone caught would be prosecuted.
