The AIDS Healthcare Foundation, AHF, on Sunday distributed 500,000 units of condom across different locations of Abuja to commemorate the Valentine’s Day.
Our reporter gathered that it was an all “red and white” affair at Edens Garden and Parks, Jabi, as lovers turned up en masse to celebrate Valentine’s Day.
AHF, however, seized the opportunity to kick off the condom giveaway campaign, accompanied by free instant HIV tests, free HIV drugs and AIDS awareness-raising activities.
Speaking to PREMIUM TIMES, the site coordinator for AHF, Kema Onu, said half a million condoms were shared across different locations of the capital city alone.
“Thousands of people are turning up to get tested,” Dr. Onu said. “It’s amazing how Nigerians are now coming out to get tested. Unlike before, the tension was palpable but now there is awareness that HIV is no longer a death threat.
“We are sharing 500,000 units of condoms here in Abuja alone, and this is concurrently happening in six states in Nigeria and 36 countries worldwide.
“Those we tested HIV positive are subsequently referred to care and equally receive free HIV vaccines.”
