The two storey building accommodating the headquarters of the Nasarawa State Universal Basic Education board has nearly caved in.
The building, which shows signs of structural defects, is located along Shendam road, Lafia close to the state’s hospital management board and accommodates about 240 staff.
The second floor of the building that houses the accounts department and conference hall looks unstable with the suspended floor of the veranda shaking and iron rods misplaced.
PREMIUM TIMES gathered that SUBEB keeps files and other valuables outside the premises for lack of office space.
A staff of the board who spoke on the condition of anonymity says effort of the board to build its own headquarters was thwarted by the state government who took over its land.
He said the state government is presently building the school of the deaf in the land situated along Akwanga road, close to the college of Agriculture Lafia.
The chairman of the board, Abdulkarim Abdullahi, who confirmed the sign of the structural defects in the structure said the decision to change location is not that of the board.
“We have been living in this dilapidated rented apartment because we don’t make decision on our own”.
“We are victims of the system and our lives are under threat. The decision to change location is not ours and we are appealing to the state government,” said Mr. Abdullahi.
