The Kwara State Government has lodged a formal complaint with the State Police Command on the attack of the state governor, Abdulfatah Ahmed, allegedly by some members of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.
The governor’s convoy was attacked on Tuesday after he flagged-off the Kishi-Kalama Road and commissioned the Kaiama General Hospital.
He was also turbaned as Jarma of Kaiama by the Emir of Kaiama, Mu’azu Omar.
In a letter signed by the Senior Special Assistant Security Intelligence to the Governor of Kwara State, B.S Abdulsam, the government told the police that the alleged PDP-sponsored hoodlums vandalized two vehicles belonging to the Speaker, Kwara State House of Assembly and one Kayode Adamsin the governor’s convoy.
It said at about 3’0clock in the morning of that day, the PDP youth members in Kaiama destroyed some billboards of Mr. Ahmed.
The government said it identified Muhammed Haliru, PDP House of Representatives aspirant for Kaiama/Baruten federal constituency of the state, Haliru Dansofo, the immediate past Special Assistant to the Governor on Chieftaincy Affairs and PDP House of Assembly aspirant, Kaiama LGA and Saidu Yusuf, a chieftain of the party as the brains behind the unfortunate incidents.
Meanwhile, the Kwara State chapter of the All Progressives Congress, APC, to which Mr. Ahmed belonged, has condemned the attack on the governor.
“We condemn the attack on Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed’s convoy and APC members. It is the height of political provocation,” the party said in a statement by its publicity secretary, Sulyman Buhari, said.
The party said the PDP and its thugs were bitter and terrified by the rousing reception accorded the governor and his entourage by the people of Kaiama hence it mounted ambush on the road around the opposition party’s secretariat which is not far from the Emir’s palace.
The APC said “It preaches and practices peace, even though all households in Kwara State are quite familiar with the violent antecedents and tendencies of the PDP. We cannot fathom why the few armed PDP thugs on rampage in Kaiama on Tuesday would choose to welcome development with violence.”
The party reminded the security agencies that the attack on the governor signified PDP’s large-scale violence planned for 2015 election.
“We call on the Police Command and other security agencies in Kwara State to promptly investigate and bring to book the PDP thugs who orchestrated the attack.”, the party said.
The APC also reiterated the determination of its members to ensure the security of Mr. Ahmed but regretted that its repeated calls on the police to check PDP’s violent tendencies had not been duly regarded.
“We state that Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed represents the symbol of our unity and prosperity in Kwara State. We shall fight with the last drop of our blood to protect his security,” it said.
“Kwara APC has issued more than Fifteen (15) press statements on the violent tendencies of the PDP in Kwara State and nothing seems to have changed about PDP’s threat to peace in Kwara State.
“The Police Command and other security agencies should not expect Kwara APC to continue to issue press statements after brutal attacks on APC members by a party that is less than 30% of our followership base in Kwara State.”
