Two lawyers in court over alleged forgery of dead man’s will

The police in Edo on Friday arraigned two lawyers and a 50-year-old man over alleged conspiracy and forgery of a dead man’s will.

The lawyers are Samuel Urhoghide,75, and Mercy Sheidum, 46.

They were charged along with Jona Sojah, 50, before an Oredo Magistrate Court in Benin.

According to the prosecution, the three persons forged a testamentary instrument purported to have been made by Sheidum’s husband, the late Kolawole.

The prosecution submitted that the accused conspired to commit the forgery in 1997 on the Murtala Mohammed Way, Benin.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the third accused – Sojah – was the dead man’s co-worker.

According to the prosecution, the offences contravened Sections 516 and 467 (2) (f) of the Criminal Code of Edo.

The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the two-count charge.

The Chief Magistrate, Fred Igbinosa, granted the two lawyers bail on self-recognition, and admitted the third accused to bail in the sum of N100, 000 and a surety.

The magistrate adjourned the case till Nov. 2, for mention.

Everything boils down to failure of leadership…Nigeria government has failed the people. If government builds infrastructure and institution and provides conducive environment for its citizens to thrive, provides jobs and social services, people would think less of seeking succor in religion. The religious leaders including both christians and moslems have taken advantage of battered lives of Nigerians to exploit the people. Now Nigerian political elites should know that there is no peace for them except they do the right thing and they must do it very urgently. All these religious extremist springing up everywhere is a result of failure of leadership in Nigeria. These religions are alien to us and must be rejected.

Correction. There is no ideological difference between Shi’a and Sunni. It was a political issue on who should be the head of the Muslim Ummah after the Prophet. The Shi’a believed that succession should be within the family of the Prophet. The Sunna on the other hand hold that leadership could not be heridatory but should emerge from the best of the prophet’s companions and after the companions allegiance should be to a Muslim with the best character.
