Sea pirates at the weekend carried out attacks on a commercial passenger boat and a patrol boat of the Joint Task Force on the water ways and creeks of Nembe and Southern Ijaw Area of Bayelsa State, killing at least one person.
PREMIUM TIMES gathered that the attack on the Commercial Boat occurred along the coastal town of Ekeni in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area, while the attack on the Patrol boat of the JTF occurred on Saturday along the Nembe-Bassanbiri Community in Nembe, Bayelsa.
The JTF attack left a soldier badly injured, while the attack on the passenger boat occurred on Thursday and claimed the life of a businesswoman, Rhoda Brisibe.
The victim was said to have been shot in the head while three other occupants of the ill-fated boat sustained injuries.
The attack on the coastal settlement occurred at about 11pm.
The remains of the deceased woman had been deposited at the Federal Medical Centre mortuary in Yenagoa.
However, in the attack on the patrol boat of the JTF, the suspected pirates ambushed the team and critically injured one of the soldiers.
A passenger boat operator who simply gave his name as Awoigha, said the sea pirates had earlier attacked a JTF platform along the Nembe Bassanbiri creek and were escaping with proceeds from the operation when they sighted the soldiers in a boat.
“It could be they thought the soldiers were on their pursuit, they opened fire on them,” he said.
The soldiers, according to the source were returning from an escort duty for a barge operated by an oil company when they were attacked.
