The suspect had evaded arrest.
The Oyo State Police Command, Tuesday, confirmed the arrest of a man, who allegedly set his wife and son ablaze two days after Christmas.
The police spokesperson, Olabisi Clet-Ilobanafor, who confirmed the arrest, said the incident took place at the family’s one-room apartment at Agugu area of Ibadan around 4 a.m. on December 27, 2013.
Ms. Clet-Ilobanafor gave the names of the deceased as Felicia (wife) and Gbolahan (son).
According to her, the suspect, who had been on the run since the incident, was arrested at Ita-Baale area of the town around 11.30 a.m. on Friday.
She added that preliminary investigations revealed that the couple had been having disagreements frequently over the husband’s allegation that the wife was having extra-marital affairs.
“Although investigations are still not conclusive, preliminary findings showed that the couple had a history of domestic violence.
“We learnt from neighbours that the woman called him an ex-convict during a dispute and before he stormed out of the house, he swore that she would not see 2014,” she said.
“The fire started in the room and surprisingly, the door to the room was locked with a padlock from outside. This suggests that the woman and her child were locked in from outside,” she added.
