Ogun Assembly passes resolution on truck drivers’ excesses

The Ogun State assembly says indiscriminate parking on both sides of the roads contributes to the loss of lives and property.

The Ogun State House of Assembly has unanimously passed a resolution calling for the convening of a stakeholders’ forum to proffer lasting solutions to the increasing loss of lives and property due to the activities of some manufacturing companies and their drivers in the State.

The resolution was consequent upon a motion moved by the Minority Leader, Job Akintan, on the need to halt indiscriminate parking and reckless driving by truck drivers carrying products from the companies.

Mr. Akintan while opening debate on the motion stated that indiscriminate parking on both sides of the roads by the drivers contributed immensely to the loss of lives and property, saying that the issue of corporate social responsibilities of the companies must also be discussed during the proposed forum.

He added that host communities should be benefiting through employment and provision of amenities by the industries, lamenting that these had not been happening.

Similarly, in their contributions, members including the Deputy Speaker, Tola Banjo, Babatunde Edunjobi, Bankole Akanbi, Olakunle Oluomo, Adeyinka Mafe, Olayiwola Ojodu and Abiodun Akovoyon said there was a need for a fact-finding visit to the companies to have first-hand information about the happenings.

They said that complaints from the people necessitated that the forum be conveyed to deliberate extensively on the matter.

In his remarks, the Speaker, Suraj Adekunbi, assured that the Assembly would put all legislative mechanisms in place to convey the stakeholders’ forum for proffering lasting solution to the problems.

In a related development, the Assembly has also passed a resolution encouraging students of both primary and secondary schools to join voluntary organizations in order to inculcate moral values and self-development in them.

This followed a motion moved by the Chairman, House Committee on Education, Science and Technology, Mr. Mafe, who stressed that school authorities should encourage students to join voluntary organizations to enhance their morals, spirit of patriotism and leadership qualities and prevent them from engaging in social vices.

Supporting the motion, lawmakers, including Olusola Sonuga, Abiodun Akovoyon, Job Akintan, Victor Fasanya, Kunle Oluomo and Layiwola Ojodu enjoined the concerned authorities to ensure that every school child belongs to one voluntary organization or the other.

The lawmakers said that by joining voluntary organizations, school children would have total dedication, moral upbringing and become prepared for future challenges.

Mr. Adekunbi submitted that membership of voluntary organizations would expose youth to diverse life experiences which in turn would galvanize them into attaining leadership positions.
