Ogun traditional ruler faces probe over misappropriation of funds

The Ogun traditional ruler is being accused of misappropriating funds.

The Olu of Itori, the traditional ruler of Itori Town, Ewekoro Local Government Area of Ogun State, Fatai Akamo, is to be probed by the Ogun Sate Government over allegations of misappropriation of funds.

Mr. Akamo was recently re-instated following a three month suspension handed down by the Ogun State Government. The traditional ruler was suspended for engaging in a public brawl with another traditional ruler, the Baale of Lapeleke, Adisa Akinremi.

The Ogun State Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Muyiwa Oladipo, who announced the probe on Thursday, said Mr. Akamo is being investigated for financial impropriety leveled against him by some local chiefs in his domain.

While the monarch’s suspension lasted, some local chiefs in his domain had staged a public protest over his alleged financial impropriety regarding the disbursement of funds.

Mr. Oladipo explained that the state government could not probe the financial allegations leveled against Mr. Akamo while his suspension lasted, because his rights and privileges as a traditional ruler had been withdrawn.

“We couldn’t do anything then on the claims by some Baale’s that the Olu of Itori misappropriated funds meant for them because the Olu of Itori was then on suspension.

“Then you could not refer to him as a monarch. But now that his suspension has been lifted, it is now a must that we call the Olu of Itori to respond to the allegations against him,” the commissioner stated.

The Commissioner also expressed hope that the royal father had learnt some lessons regarding his conduct in public as well as in his relationship with his subjects.

“We just believe that not only the Olu of Itori but also all other Obas (kings) must have learnt some lessons from that,” he said.

“It is the ability of an Oba to manage others that will make him stand out over others. I’ll just advise that those that do not want him there, since he is an Oba, they should learn to accept him. They should accept and tolerate the Kabiyesi. I believe that he must have learnt some lessons and he should please preside over his community very well,” the commissioner said.
