The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) says it has been vindicated as an investigative report by the police, into the accident involving a lorry and the convoy of Edo State Governor, Adams Oshiomhole, on April 28, 2012, has linked the ownership of the lorry to a stalwart of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN).
Mr. Oshiomhole is a member of the ACN, the party on whose platform he won the 2007 Edo governorship election, and whose platform he is also contesting the forthcoming July governorship election in the state.
The events leading to the impending Edo State governorship elections have been rife with violence which have been repeatedly blamed on the PDP, the state’s opposition party by the ruling ACN. Following the accident which led to the death of three journalists, there were reports that claimed the accident may have been orchestrated by the PDP.
“We recall that Governor Oshimole has blamed the PDP for this tragic incident. We also recall that we stated unambiguously that the PDP does not need the blood of innocent Nigerians to win elections anywhere in Nigeria much less in Edo state. We categorically urged the security agencies to look beyond the crocodile tears and the loud alarm of lion –in- the -neighbourhood raised by the ACN. We are today vindicated,” the PDP said on Monday.
In a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Olisa Metuh, the PDP said that though the Edo State government has before now mistreated members of the PDP, the party expects to win the coming elections.
“We are sure of victory in the election. All that the PDP is asking for is free and fair election. We are asking for the cessation of intimidation and regime of violence by the ACN, so that the people will vote their choice without inhibition,” Mr. Metuh said.
The PDP further commended its members and supporters in Edo State for a successful grand finale of its gubernatorial campaign which was attended by President Goodluck Jonathan.
“The unprecedented turnout at the campaign rally is a firm comment on the strength of our great Party in the State. We are not in doubt that this is a compelling sign of a sure electoral victory in the coming election,” the statement added.
