Jonathan plans to arrest me, says Buhari

Former Head of State, Muhammadu Buhari, on Tuesday said President Goodluck Jonathan and the Federal Government were hatching a plot to arrest him.

Speaking to PREMIUM TIMES via his closest political associate and national secretary of his party, Buba Galadima, Mr. Buhari said the presidency and the ruling party were already preparing the ground to harass, arrest and incarcerate him.

“They are just trying to give us a bad name in order to hang us,” Mr. Galadima told this newspaper in a telephone interview. “We know that they are already planning to arrest the General and I, they are just preparing grounds for their actions.”

Mr Buhari was reacting to statements issued by the the presidency and the national headquarters of the Peoples Democratic Party describing him as a serial election loser and blood thirsty politician, who is in the habit of inciting his supporters to violence.

The PDP and the presidency issued the statements in reaction to comments attributed to Mr. Buhari on Monday where he said the Nigerian government, led by President Goodluck Jonathan of the ruling PDP, is more deadly than the extremist Boko Haram sect and that any attempt to rig the 2015 election would be firmly resisted.

In its statement, released at a hurriedly convened press conference, the PDP said the leader of the opposition Congress for Progressive Change had become unstable and is being haunted by what it described as “combat withdrawal syndrome.”

The party also described the retired army general as excessively blood thirsty.

Shortly afterwards, the presidency came out smoking describing Mr. Buhari as a serial election looser renowned for inciting Nigerians to violence.

But speaking to PREMIUM TIMES after the statements were released, Mr. Buhari said rather than him, it was the PDP and the Jonathan-led  Federal Government that were the real threat to peace in the country.

“It is those who organise the rigging of elections that are trying to disrupt the peace, not Buhari,” the former head of state said, through Mr. Galadima.

Mr. Galadima also said the PDP and the presidency only came up with the allegations because the government “is planning to arrest Buhari and I, and so they are using Monday’s remarks as an excuse.”

It is not General that is threatening peace, rather it is the action of the PDP that is leading to bloodbath, they have infected us with bloodbath,” he added.

In its statement, the PDP said such remarks by Mr. Buhari was capable of “inciting people to take the law into their hands” adding that it was the same sort of remark that the retired general made prior to the last presidential election that led to “a spate of bloody post-election violence across six states of the federation”.

The party also claimed that a 22-man panel raised by the government to investigate the causes of the post-election violence under the leadership of Ahmed Lemu “confirmed that Buhari’s provocative remarks played a significant role in the bloody violence that led to the death of at least 200 people, gruesomely injuring thousands and the displacement of more than 40,000 people.”

The PDP said although it believed in freedom of speech, assembly and association, it is also of the view that such freedom comes with responsibilities.

The party said it “condemn in no uncertain terms this shameful call for the spill of blood of innocent Nigerians to acquire political power”.

What Nigeria needs right now is ‘evolution’ in the true spirit of democracy. The utterances of General Buhari, a former military Head of State is truly, undemocratic, unpatriotic and un-statesmanly,” it added.

The ruling party continued, “Buhari’s pre-election utterances were misconstrued by his supporters to engage in the condemnable mayhem that greeted the aftermath of the presidential elections.  Buhari never apologized to the nation or to the families of the victims. Today, Buhari is again engaged in another build up of massive bloodletting and destruction”.

However, shortly after the press conference by the PDP, the presidency also issued a statement describing the former head of state as “a serial election loser who has never taken his past election defeats graciously even when such elections were generally acknowledged to be free and fair.”

The statement also described the comments by the retired general referring to the Jonathan government as Boko Haram  as unfortunate.

“The Federal Government led by President Jonathan is not Boko Haram. Boko Haram means Western Education is sin. That being the case, one wonders how a government that devoted the largest sectoral allocation in the 2012 budget to education could be said to be Boko Haram,” presidential spokesperson, Reuben Abati said.

The Federal government, Mr. Abati said, can  “ now challenge Major General Buhari  to tell Nigerians what he has done, whether in his capacity as the head of a military junta or in his private capacity, to bring education to vulnerable children. If he cannot live up to this challenge, perhaps he has to reassess who really is Boko Haram”.

Mr. Abati also said the government was particularly disturbed by Mr. Buhari’s remarks in which he said that “Since the leaders now don’t listen to anybody but do whatever they wish, there is nothing the north can do.”

We find it very sad that an elder statesman who once presided over the entirety of Nigeria can reduce himself to a regional leader who speaks for only a part of Nigeria,” Mr. Abati added.

“When Buhari says that “if what happens in 2011 should again happen in 2015, by the grace of God, ‘the dog and the baboon would all be soaked in blood”, we hereby state that it is Buhari himself who does not listen.

“He has obviously refused to listen to the Nigerian People, the European Union, the Commonwealth Monitoring Group, the African Union and a multitude of independent electoral monitors who testified that the 2011 elections were free and fair and “the best elections since Nigeria returned to civil rule.

“Finally, we wish to make it known to Buhari that given his reference to “dogs and baboons”, perhaps his best course of action would be to travel to the zoo of his imagination because President Goodluck Jonathan was elected by human beings to preside over human beings and it is human beings who will determine what happens in Nigeria at any material time not “dogs and baboons”.

Buhari is the biggest disgrace to humanity. He is the worse disgrace to the Nigerian Army. To think that this can kind of jungle animal rose to the rank of General in the Nigerian Army and even at some brief moment ruled Nigeria as Head of State makes me weep for Nigeria. Buhari should be arrested and thoroughly processed for the animal zoo where he truly belongs.

  • KenMani

Jonathan, please be warned; Buhari is dead and finished but in desperate need of revival. Don’t give him the opportunity and life-line he is craving for by arresting him. You must not arrest Buhari even though it is right and proper for you to do so. Please continue to Buhari in the hands of Nigerians whom I am sure will continue to keep Buhari in the refuse bin until he completely decays out.

Please continue to leave Buhari in the hands of Nigerians whom I am sure will continue to keep Buhari in the refuse bin until he completely decays out

    • Otopsyn

Buhari knows that in every ramification,he is no match to Jonathan. The only way he compensates himself is to utter inciting remarks so that the polity will be tensed. My utmost wish for him is that he contests as he has declared, come 2015.I am always interested in his looks of disappointment whenever results are announced.

  • KenMani

Mr. Buhari’s remarks in which he said that “Since the leaders now don’t listen to anybody but do whatever they wish, there is nothing the NORTH can do.” This statement from Buhari clearly reveals who Buhari represents and what he wants. I have always known and said that Buhari has a hidden agenda in his presidential campaigns. Those of you who doubted my comments have now been forced to eat your words. Buhari, the most desired by the Northern Muslim Hausa-Fulani won’t solve the problem of corruption or bad government either because that is not his focus. Have you observed that since the creation of Katsina State in September 1987, Buhari and his political associates have never won Governorship, National Assembly, State Assembly and local Government elections held at any time in Katsina State? If truly Buhari has a developmental positive agenda and he is loved by his people as we are being forced to believe why can’t they support him to win elections in Katsina State and use the opportunity to put into practice all that he wants to do at the Federal level if he wins the Presidency. This will actually help clean up his horrible past and he can point to the performance of his party in Katsina State as a model of what his Presidential leadership as a civilian will look like or bring to the people. Makes a lot of sense!!!! But I am curious that Buhari has never complained or gone to court against any elections in Katsina State. In fact, he makes no effort at ensuring that his party wins National Assembly, State and Local government elections in Katsina. Is this not a confirmation that Buhari’s interest lies only in getting he Presidency solely for the purpose of carrying out personal vendetta against fellow Nigerians while dubiously hiding under cover of Islamization of the entire country; which he deems popular to most unsuspecting Northern Muslim Hausa-Fulani. It is obvious that Buhari’s lack of interest in Katsina State is because Katsina State has few of the people he wants to carry out his vendetta against and is already substantially Islamized; so his focus is on other parts of Nigeria (selectively targeted to include areas that are not substantially Islamized) where most of the individuals he wants to carry out his personal vendetta against reside and winning the presidency will present him with the most desired platform.

    • noname anonymous

Nobody can Islamize the whole of Nigeria. If anyone was to try, they would not last very long. At most, they can Islamize the North, but try it in the South (even to introduce Sharia just among the minority of Muslims in the South) and they will fail abjectly. Southerners will not accept the brutality and backwardness of Sharia among them. They may try to Islamize, but they will fail.

The point, really, is that Nigeria should split: the North should form its own country and the South should form its own country / group of countries. Let referendums on the issue be held in each part of the country: any state/group of states/area or tribe (no matter how small e.g the Ogoni, the Ijaw or even the Ijebu) that votes for its own full independence in a referendum should become fully independent immediately. No one has a right to impose external rule on it. No true democrat, supporter of human rights and human freedoms can be opposed to the holding of referendums on the issue and the adherence to the outcome of those referendums. They can be held before the election so that the election will be about voting in new governments for our newly independent separate countries. Our newly independent countries should each then adopt the Swiss style of democracy where instead of a single president there is a 7 man elected council in which each member is equal. Also the Swiss constitution says that any member of the public can at any time initiate a referendum on any issue (including a change to the constitution itself, to challenge a law made by the bicameral parliament, or just to make an outright new law). This way concentrations of power in one individual are avoided, as is concentration of power in elected officials as a whole: the public has a channel to override parliament and the 7 man presidential council.

But sticking to the arrest of Buhari, the subject of the article, for the crime of murder (using a retroactive decree to deprive convicts of their right to only be subjected to a sentence that existed in law at the time they committed their crimes and substituting that lawful sentence for the death sentence which did not exist at the time they committed their crimes), Buhari should be immediately arrested and tried.
This is an internationally accepted legal principle and there is no statute of limitation on murder (there is no time limit within which a prosecution has to be brought), so even now, about 30 years later, Buhari can and should be immediately arrested and tried.
If Buhari’s running mate, Osinbanjo, is truly an honest lawyer, this immediate arrest of Buhari is what he should be pushing for publicly and through the channels of the justice system. After all, he was the Prosecutor for Lagos State (Attorney General and Minister of Justice of Lagos State). What kind of prosecutor allows a murderer to run free and also joins him as his running mate in an election?

  • Madugu Ibrahim.I.

  • Alphonsusduniya

The northerners have ruled this country(both military and civilians) for more than thirty years now and have nothing to show for it except for their families. Now that the southerners are in control and are uplifting this nation they want to disintegrate this our dear country out of shame. Is it now that they know what they were supposed to have done for this country which they never did and are aggressively looking for opportunities forcefully? Take a look at the northerners, most of them are full of object poverty caused by their fellow northern ruling class and same people(the poor) never learn their lessons; to them so long as a northerner is there they are satisfied with their poverty because they are satisfied with the N50 N50 (maula) shared to them when such people arrive home on a visit with their loots.
For Buhari I have no much words to qualify him he is a confused element. People are just giving him hope even when they know he will and can never rule Nigeria again. Bye bye Buhari. Accept my sympathy.

  • bonifacejoe

This man always threatens blood and violence. Does he not have the dictionary of peace in his life? a religious fanatic like buhari cannot smell the presidency of this country if it remains one.

    • Otopsyn

Bonifacejoe.Do you know Buhari’s campaing slogan when he came to Minna,Niger State to campaign last year, it is ‘Sai mai sallah’… Meaning the next president must be a muslim. He knew he had nothing based on issues he can use in convincing the people. He can never become a president of Nigeria.

  • Abdulbasi ishaq

Yes Muhammad Buhari has told the true and if this thing happon again in the nest election we are going to take a serious action in our hand becouse we all undastand president jonathan is to write to kill all our parents and nigerian citizens in general there therefore be carefull for net teniours.

    • Otopsyn

You sound much like Buhari in your views. Are you any way related?

  • Chyprops

What kind of violence and blood bath is Buhari preaching and refering to ? Fellow Nigerians kiling one another barbarically? Moslems killing Christian ? Northern killing southerns ? Enough is enough. How long shall we continue to allow selfish and corruptible old men to distroy us while their children enjoy absolute security from the state and abroad. This govt must leave up to her responsibility.
