The Osun State Governor, Rauf Aregbesola, and some traditional rulers have called on Nigerians to strive for the unity of Nigeria. The call was made on Sunday at the Osun State government house where Mr. Aregbesola hosted the traditional rulers.
Some of the traditional rulers Mr. Aregbesola hosted were the Ooni of Ife, Okunade Sijuade, Sultan of Sokoto, Saa’ad Abubakar, Emir of Kano, Ado Bayero, and Emir of Zauzau, Shehu Idris. Mr. Aregbesola appealed to Nigeria’s leaders to drop all impediments to national cooperation.
Mr. Aregbesola said “since there is no other country to be called theirs, Nigerians have a duty to ensure the continued corporate existence for its progress.”
He said Nigeria’s leaders should ensure stability country, adding that for a country desirous of progress and greatness, leaders must be ready to account for whatever becomes of it.
The governor said that the country could be great if its leaders focused on unity. “I want to seize this opportunity to call to all of us political leaders, spiritual leaders, military leaders and traditional leaders to drop whatever it is that is beclouding our focus to build a virile, united, people-serving and developing country that we shall be proud of” he said.
Mr. Aregbesola held that it was necessary for Nigeria’s leaders to neglect side distractions and focused on harnessing the country’s potential. “We all must rally round that focus, that potential to make it not just a mere big nation but a nation that is big in population, big in size and big charting a course for all the Black people of the world.”
The governor applauded the presence and the contribution of the Emir of Kano, Emir of Zazau and the Sultan of Sokoto, Saa’ad Abunkar especially. He said their sacrifices would be crucial in achieving the unity of the country.
Mr. Aregbesola and the northern traditional rulers agreed that traditional rulers had a vital role in the promotion of unity among the ethnic communities within the country by visiting themselves and encouraging their subjects to do the same.
