The result of the Rivers East Senatorial bye-election held on Thursday has been announced with George Sekibo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) winning with 472,224 votes.
Otu Ekpeyong, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Returning Officer for the district, announced the result on Friday in Port Harcourt.
He said that Lasbry Amadi of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) came second with 18,109 votes while Chizi Michael of Action Alliance (AA) came third with 14,371 votes.
Mr. Ekpeyong said that he was satisfied with the outcome of the election.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that INEC conducted the bye-election following the annulment of Sekibo’s earlier mandate by the Court of Appeal sitting in Port Harcourt.
The AA candidate had challenged the senatorial election won by Mr. Sekibo on grounds that INEC omitted his name on the ballot paper.
