Boko Haram: Runaway Nigerian soldiers return from Cameroon

Nigerian soldiers on patrol in Maiduguri

Some of the Nigerian soldiers that fled to Cameroon following a fierce battle with Boko Haram militants in locations around Borno and Adamawa states  have returned as residents of Mubi town in Adamawa State reported seeing tired and tattered-looking soldiers arrive.

The residents said they saw several soldiers, wearing torn uniforms and gloomy faces, returned in the wee hours of Tuesday.

The residents suspect that the returning soldiers were among the 500 soldiers that fled to Cameroon on Monday.

A resident, Joseph Baba, said “we saw some of them purchasing second hand clothes at the Mubi main market”.

‘’Initially, we were afraid. People panicked when we sighted the troops. They arrived in the wee hours and people began to scamper for safety because no one knew their mission. I even thought they were Boko Haram disguised in military uniform as the insurgents usually do,” Mr. Baba said.

Nigerian soldiers on the battle field often complain about being under equipped to face Boko Haram insurgents.

On Monday, the soldiers retreated and sought refuge in Cameroon in what the military authorities later described as tactical manoeuvre.

The spokesperson for the Defence Headquarters, Chris Olukolade, could not be reached Tuesday to confirm the return of the soldiers. He did not answer or return calls.

But Mr. Olukolade had said in a statement Monday that the troops were “on their way back to join their unit in Nigeria”.

However, an hour after this report was published, the Defence Headquarters issued a brief statement confirming the return of the soldiers.

It said the “troops who returned from Cameroon were today addressed by the General Officer Commanding 3 Division, Major General Zaruwa as they embarked on another mission in the Counter Terrorism campaign”.

All the soldiers are in high spirit with all their weapons and equipment intact, the statement added.

In a video released on Sunday, which also showed scenes of Nigerian soldiers running for safety and arms recovered from Nigerian soldiers, Abubakar Shekau, the sect leader congratulated his fighters for seizing the town of Gwoza earlier this month.

Defy curfew, Boko Haram says

Meanwhile, residents of Madagali town in Adamawa State said Boko Haram insurgents told them to defy the 24-hour curfew imposed by the state government.

Acting Governor Umar Fintiri on Sunday announced the curfew after Boko Haram’s fighters invaded the town, which shares a boundary with Borno town- Gwoza, seized by the insurgents.

Residents said the insurgents, who move freely in the town, brandishing their guns, asked them to continue with their normal businesses, without fear of attack.

“They asked us to ignore the 24-hour curfew, promising not to attack us. They (Boko Haram) told us that they are not after us now; rather, they are pursuing troops being deployed,” a resident of the town, who asked not to be named, said.

Refugees in Cameroon

With reports of swelling numbers of displaced persons and insufficient camps, some residents who crossed over to Cameroon have allegedly been arrested by Cameroonian security operatives.

“Many residents are now on the hilltops, while those that were able to cross to Cameroon are reported to have been arrested by Cameroonian security operatives,” a source, who did not want to be named for security reasons, told PREMIUM TIMES.

EDITOR’S NOTE: This post was updated to reflect the confirmation by the Defence Headquarters that the soldiers had returned.

Nigerian Made The British To Leave, What Is The Fulanis From Guinea Doing In Nigeria. – Alhaji Mujahid Asari Dokubo:

**Ilorin is a Yoruba city, Emir of Ilorin is a Fulani. Bida is a Nupe town, Emir of Bida is a Fulani. Birnin Gwari is a Gbagi town, the Emir of Birnin Gwari is a Fulani. Why?

Boko Haram is not fighting for anything other than the seizure of political power by the Fulani people. They are using Kanuri territory to perpetrate the evil, but the main people instigating this bloodletting are the Fulani from Futa Djallon. We know where they came from. They are colonialists and if we made the British to leave, what are these people doing here? They are also colonialists.

You have to reflect and ask yourself some questions.

Kano is a Hausa city, the Emir of Kano is not a Hausa man; he is a Fulani. Ilorin is a Yoruba city, the Emir of Ilorin is a Fulani. Bida is a Nupe town, the Emir of Bida is a Fulani. Birnin Gwari is a Gbagi town, the Emir of Birnin Gwari is a Fulani. The Lamido of Adamawa who is residing in Yola is a Fulani, who claims he has other Fulanis in Cameroon and other places. These are not Fulani cities. We know where they all came from.

    • redeem

They all migrated from far-flung places to their present locations. So if we know where they come from and we know that they are not from here, they came to colonise these territories. What are they still doing here? If the British left, the French left, the Germans left, the Portuguese left, the Belgians left, what are these people doing here? They are also colonialists, but this is what our elites are ready to accept.

Why should we allow foreigners to dominate the aborigines? When people like us talk, they say these are very sensitive issues, don’t touch them. Why should we not touch them? Why should the Sultan of Sokoto be the head of Muslims in Nigeria? Where did we meet and make the Sultan our head? So these are the things. But a lot of people don’t look beyond the surface. A man says he is born to rule; you have not asked yourself, if that man is born to rule, what about you? If the man is born to rule, you are born to be ruled.

So you become drawers of water and hewers of wood. A wise man in one of the great books I have read said: For I have seen a grave injustice on the surface of the earth that I saw the servants riding on horseback and princes walking on foot. The Hausa man in Kano is walking on foot; Sanusi, a Fulani man, a Gambari from Guinea is riding on horseback.

Fulani Sulu-Gambari in Ilorin is riding on horseback. These are the issues that we’ve not been able to capture. Why should injustice continue? Why should the indigenous Hausa population in Kano not be given back what rightfully belongs to them? Why is it that in Ilorin, the indigenous Yoruba people, the ones they call Baba Agba, are not given back what rightfully belongs to them?

Nigerians soldiers under president Ebele Jonathan have lost capability, and advance-military tactical knowledge because, president Jonathan and his corrupt-ridden service chiefs usually shared the huge military allocation votes running into trillions of naira hence, our soldiers lacked good training in advance tactical method to fight war and defeat insurgents like Boko Haram.Shame and disgrace of the highest order.President of failue and corruption practices.

    • sharp shape

      Ako bata fulani ! Ode

    • rebecca m. akpan

Dr pat kolawole A, if you have the fear of God, you not address Mr president in that manner. Only a country like Nigeria disprespect their president, particularly GEJ. If you are truly a christian or someone who believes in God, and his worshipper, you raise not your hand, voice or pen against God’ anointed. Romans chapter 13:1_14 and also Luke 21:6_36 Jesus raised his voice to forewarn his linters upon impending crises that must surely happen that would preceed his soon return. The devil, Satan the dragon knows his time is up, seeking who to devour, he has deceived many, and is still snatching many to hell. Daniel chapter 12:1_13 compare to Luke 21….. God has always provide ways and means of escape to those who may trust and believe in him e.g in Rev. Chip 1:7. with this promise of his coming. My advise to all who point insults and blame on Mr president should consider their utterances. The who earth is in trouble. Read also Matt 24:1_51. These are statements that affects us in one way or the other. So it is not Mr president faults but selfishness and greedy, and a myth that never be achieved by secret plan of the enemies of this country who would not mind to sacrifice your blood and mind to get or claim what they think is there’s. Pls, prayer is the best bet, that is what Jesus taught us, pray for your enemies. Keep your spirit high in the Lord, your salvation draweth near. Peace to Nigeria. SHEKAU, consider your ways, we are praying for you, that God should touch your heart and his peace should reach you in Jesus name, give God the opportunity to appraise your situation, so much bleeding and blood in the land. Satan is a defeated for to God and man. Please shekau consider theses situations in the land, God is not happy. Jesus came to seek and to save that which was lost.

Who is being unpatriotic? The most unpatriotic person is the one that gets paid to respond to whoever criticize the PDP government . The one that has been blindfolded because he is working for his pay master. The one that can not use his God given brain to distinguish between the truth and falsehood . The one that would put the soldiers on the war front without adequate weaponry. The one that refers to fraud and corruption as mere stealing of government property. The one that banned large congregation because of the present health issue but turned blind eyes to those organizing rally for him to run for office in 2015. My brother, let’s start telling ourselves the truth. The ‘tactical’ retreat as claimed by the government might be true or false. However, that doesn’t stop us from assuming the latter, it’s only when you assume such position, that you may yet be a patriot. Patriotism is following with absolute reason and not following blindly.

    • Adeyi

This illegal entry by the Nigerian soldiers breaches every sense of the protocol if indeed the army says its a tactical manoeuvre. Were the Cameroonian authorities briefed of any intention to step on their soil? If no, then the army should accept media reports that the soldiers were chased out of their country by BH or they chickened out of a fight.

This move by the Nigerian Army could be likened to a failed invasion of Camerron. We forget that we have a history of war or near-war with Cameroon.

It is a pity that the army of the ‘greatest country in Africa’ has been reduced to a Boys Scout Company which is used for election matters. Me think that it is time that the real soldiers stood up and be counted.

Our soldiers (and their wives and children) have been crying out for a long time about their ‘inability’ to face the enemy, yet the army has always come out to deny this fact. The DHQ and AHQ have always told us they were battle ready for BH, but were strategising. Now we hear an army chief say that they are taking delivery of weapons to fight BH. Is this now or before now? This is confirmation that ‘anti-BH weapons,’ whatever that means, are in short supply!

DHQ/AHQ, please do the needful and save the nation this huge embarrassment.

Now that you say that you have spoken to your counterparts in Cameroon, and the soldiers have confirmed they will be on their way back to Nigeria, I hope you will strategise well on how to outmanoeuvre BH as the boys return home, to avoid ambush and blood shed. Better still, just send in the Charlies to airlift them back home to their families.

Tactical maneuver ? For 80 kilometers ? Even Boko Boys (BB) might have return to sleep while Nigerian Solders are still runing in the bush ! To cross into Cameroon means invension and tempering with their territorial integrity, soverignty, and breach of immigration laws. What ashamed ? Last week Chad rescue 83 Nigerians from BH, few weeks ago Cameroun rescue the wife of the Deputy Prime Minister abducted by BH, same BHB ( Boko Haram Boys) ransack police training college and abduct police officers, now Military run for 80 kilometers in Atactical maneuvers !
If this happen in a country with integrity all the army chiefs and senior officers involve with this shame will voluntarily resign but in Nigeria they will be rewarded for failure and telling lies to cover it.
Shame and shame for those who believe patriotism is to fail and tell lies to cover it !
Now that I have explain this in over 80 words without maneuvering, let me leave you to judge tactically !

Those extolling bokoharam and running down the Nigerian military think they are catching fun now, you dont worry, it will get to a point that the military boys who are warding off the bokoharam terrorists will give way because of the negative attitude of Nigerians towards them. That time you will all see that you will have to defend yourselves. Then it will be every man to himself and God for us all. You buffoons are talking because you still have military men keeping the terrorists at bay. Wait and see.

    • Mr. STEPHEN

that is my point exactly, why are we demoralising our soldiers and extolling the terrorists? this is not fair for our men and women in uniform who are paying the ultimate price daily to see that we live in a free society…we must desist from this please…

    • concerned9ja

Misdirected anger bro! Direct your anger at the C-in-C and his govt which has turned our military to rag-tags.

    • Osogbo

What Nigerians need is liberal gun policies for responsible family head after passing psychological test. The bullets issued to family heads will have tracking numbers and license will be renewable annually. With that the issue of Boko haram and armed robbery will not exist or minimal. Boko haram are teenagers or young people with guns period. Nigeria fear of allowing responsible adults to own fire arms created the problem.

  • duke

Ever since our military were returned to election venues to do police duties, they lost focus that’s why all their interest now is to protect politicians and not our territory cos they know their reward in stewardship when it has to do with politicians. As we speak, some of them are now campaing managers to politicians.

    • Mr. STEPHEN

that is a blatant lie, our security men and women are trying their best, with our active support and coorperation we will defeat this terrorists soon…

      • kwaro

  • Mr. STEPHEN

our officers and men of the armed forces deserves our prayers and support, we must not in any way demoralise them either knowingly or unknowingly..please….

    • Thepeople

The armed forces are already demoralised. Nobody need to do that for them. They have been failed and let down by their superiors and the government. Their superiors are busy embezzling money and chasing contract while our army decay.

  • Thepeople

Cowardice thou act Nigerian armed forces. This is a shameful and national disgrace. We have become a nation with no pride. Our legislators, and so called national leaders are busy playing politics in the face of this national calamity. An Army without discipline is as good as area boys. The difference is that they carry guns. But they know how to go on rampage, destroy buses, protect politicians for money, and attack innocent civilians simply because they guns. They are simply nothing without their guns. It goes to show that if everyone is allowed to carry guns as Boko Haram has got or like in USA, our soldiers would amount to just a boys brigade.

  • Countryman

The soldiers acted wisely to escaped for safety in other to fight another day than to die in that battle. One thing we should know that, the soldiers are human being who have families & responsibilities. As for me, this is not a country one to die for.
