This write-up is dedicated to giving thanks to God, today, December 10, 2012, on my 50th birthday. I doubt that the time spent writing this piece will give due credit to all God has done for me in my fifty years on earth, but I will give it a shot.
On this day, I give to God with all my love.
Thank you dear God for the parents you gave me. They conceived, nurtured and continue to be my guiding light.
Thank you dear God for the country of my birth, Nigeria. I know we have challenges (all countries do). For some of us, our challenges mount with every passing day. I know Lord that you don’t give us challenges without reason. You have taught us that fulfillment, true fulfillment comes after surmounting what seems to be an insurmountable challenge and that you never leave us wanting. As one ponders the challenges, one also reflects on the diversity we have and the strengths it gives us, ready to be leveraged on. You gave us a country with the freedom of thought that gives us a sense of worth and ability to hold our own; a country with historical accomplishments dating back centuries, giving us the confidence of knowing that our ancestors before us were noble men; a country with the numerical and resource rich strength that just requires better planning and team work to enable us tap all that you have put at our disposal. I thank you for the opportunity to even have a challenge, to wake up every morning knowing that there is work to be done in every aspect of society, with Government as the enabler, knowing that there is a reason to live, and a reason to make service to humanity a calling and continuous quest that you will be pleased with.
I thank you God for my brothers and sisters – born of my Father and Mother, born of my extended family, born of God. There at every moment of need, the invisible support network that nobody sees and yet one wonders time and time again “where does she draw her strength from”.
I thank you God for my teachers, those in the classroom – nursery, primary, secondary, tertiary and professional environment; those in the workplace, those in the world, those I encounter every single day, in every facet of life, who through their words and actions, constantly add to my knowledge and skills, even when what they say, is not pleasing to the ear, renewing me every day, making me a better person.
I thank you God for my children, God-children, Step-children, Adopted children, Mentee children, Work–children, for giving me the opportunity to contribute to their lives and to learn from them in every single way.
I thank you God for my friends, acquaintances and all those I do not even know, who through their prayers, words and actions strengthen and support me. Their demonstration of gratitude and words of “thank you” at every instant or recollection of service makes work pleasure and more valuable than Gold. Their constant feedback, to correct actions perceived as wrong or inappropriate and to act right, more valuable than Diamond. The mere fact that we engage is a blessing, a thousand times and more.
I thank you God for my doctors, nurses and caregivers who keep us healthy and whole; whom we always take for granted and whom we typically only remember when we need them. I use this opportunity to say that they are in my thoughts always even If I don’t always let them know.
I thank you God for my husband and my best friend with whom I have grown, learned a wider view of life, learned love in its true meaning and ramification, disagreed with to be even stronger in our union, making me a better, more knowledgeable and God fearing person.
Dear God, I thank YOU, for YOU, your presence at every moment. I thank you for seeing me through the happiest and the darkest of days. I thank you for the knowledge that every moment, of joy and/or pain, are times to give thanks to God, and to recognize that our purpose on earth is to discover and walk God’s chosen path.
