UNIMAID insists on Sept. 3 resumption date

The University of Maiduguri on Wednesday denied media reports that it has extended its resumption date for both new and returning students by three months.

The university had earlier announced a September 3, 2012 resumption date for new and returning students.

The university’s Public Relations Officer, Mohammed Ahmed, said this in a statement in Maiduguri.

“The attention of the management of the University of Maiduguri has been drawn to a media report to the effect that the resumption date for students had been extended by three months.

“The report also indicated that the institution had cancelled one academic session, thereby jeopardising the chances of students who applied for admission into the university,” he said.

He said although it is true that the management had cancelled one academic session due to the prevailing security challenges, the action will not affect other academic programmes of the institution.

“The management wishes to make it categorically clear that while the cancellation of one academic session was done due to the security challenges in the state, it has in no way affected other academic programmes of the university.

“Furthermore, there was never a time that the resumption date for new and returning students was extended as portrayed by the report,” Ahmed said.

He explained that the university would re-open on September 3, for the first semester of the 2012/2013 session in line with its calendar.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the Senate of the university at its meeting on June 28, 2012, approved the calendar of dates and events for the 2012/2013 session.

“According to the calendar, registration for first semester 2012/2013 session for all students will commence on September 3, and end on September 22, while lectures will begin for all students on September 24, 2012,” he said.

He said that the first semester examinations would be held between January 14, 2013 and February 9, 2013, under the arrangement.

“Lectures for the second semester will begin on February 25, 2013, with examinations commencing on June 17 and ending on July 13, 2013.

“In the light of the above, the management would like to seize this opportunity to appeal to the media to always cross-check and seek for clarifications where necessary before going to press,” Mr. Ahmed said.
