AU election: Nigerian emerges AU Commissioner for Political Affairs

Nigeria’s Aisha Abdullahi was on Monday elected as African Union Commissioner for political affairs at the AU commission.

Ms. Abdullahi defeated her only rival, a candidate from Botswana, by 35 votes to 15.

Seven candidates from D.R. Congo, Ghana, Tchad, Burundi, Botswana, Zimbabwe, and Cameroon contested for the position; although Ghana withdrew earlier to pave way for Nigeria.

During today’s voting the remaining four were eliminated as it progressed leaving Nigeria and Botswana in the final round.

Ms. Abdullahi, who holds a doctorate degree in organic chemistry, is Nigeria’s ambassador to the Republic of Guinea and a former commissioner in Bauchi State.
