Death toll rises to 124 in Rivers tanker disaster

The Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) on Monday said that the death toll from the Okobe tanker mishap that occurred on Thursday July 3, in Ahoada West Local Government Area of Rivers State, has risen to 124.

Kayode Olagunju, the FRSC sector commander in Rivers, made this disclosure in an update on his Facebook page.

According to him, “as at noon today July 16, the record of deaths collated based on additional deaths in the hospitals stands at 124.”

Mr. Olagunju also held that the figures are not definite yet as there might be multiple counting resulting from transfer of victims to different hospitals.

“We are still battling with the actual injury figures… Some victims initially went home for traditional treatment while others headed for some private clinics,” he said.

The FRSC said his agency will work with other agencies and the Rivers state government to collate the actual figures.

He prayed for the repose of the souls of the departed and wished the injured quick recovery.
