Courts across Kogi State were shut on Thursday as the state chapter of the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN) commenced an indefinite strike over unpaid salary arrears and leave bonuses, halting legal proceedings throughout the state.
The union stated that its decision followed the state government’s alleged failure to fulfil commitments made nearly two months ago regarding the payment of October 2024 salary arrears and the 2025 leave bonus.
In a statement jointly signed by its chairman, Emmanuel Waniko, and secretary, Sule Suberu, JUSUN accused Governor Ahmed Ododo’s administration of “persistent insincerity” in handling workers’ welfare.
Union accuses govt of reneging on agreement
The labour leaders said a planned strike earlier in the year was suspended after the Heads of Courts informed the union that the governor had approved payment of the outstanding entitlements. That assurance, they said, has remained unmet.

“It is rather unfortunate that the governor’s promise of payment could not be fulfilled, even as we have waited patiently,” the statement read.
“The union expresses deep disappointment and has directed that, effective from Thursday, 4 December 2025, all staff of the Kogi State Judiciary should proceed on an indefinite strike.”
‘No staff should report to duty’
JUSUN instructed its members not to engage in any official duties until the government clears the arrears.
“The payment of October 2024 arrears and the 2025 leave bonus must be made before resumption,” the union said, noting that the shutdown would remain total.

The strike is expected to stall ongoing trials, bail hearings, filing processes and other justice-sector operations, a disruption likely to worsen delays already confronting Kogi’s congested courts.
Urging workers to remain steadfast, the leaders added: “The Union salutes your courage and support throughout the struggle… Aluta Continua; Victoria Acerta.”
The Kogi State Government has not issued an official response as of press time.
