The police in Jigawa State have confirmed the arrest of a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Abubakar Gossima. Although the police did not provide a reason for the arrest, Mr Gossima’s associates say it is over a social media comment deemed offensive to a politician.
PREMIUM TIMES reported that Mr Gossima was arrested after the comment opposing a party member’s ambition to go to the House of Representatives.

Mustapha Bulangu, a friend of Mr Gossima, on Friday, told PREMIUM TIMES that the police intercepted a vehicle in which Mr Gossima was travelling on Thursday along the Kafin Hausa/Bulangu highway in Bulangu town in the Kafin Hausa Local Government Area.
Mr Bulangu said a police team, led by Mustpaha Taufiq of the Special Investigation Unit, Abuja, took Mr Gossima to Abuja over a complaint by Aliyu Suleiman.

Mr Suleiman, an aspirant for the House of Representatives, reportedly took offence at Mr Gossima’s social media comment.
“We are not so politically backwards that we will warrant voting for that irresponsible boy as our member in the House of Representatives,” Mr Gossima said in a comment in Hausa, allegedly referring to Mr Suleiman.
The police spokesperson in Jigawa, Lawan Adam, said he had not been briefed about the arrest on Friday. But on Saturday he confirmed the arrest.
He said the suspect had been taken to the force headquarters in Abuja and not the Jigawa State command as being speculated in the state.
Mr Adam said Mr Gossima was arrested by the Special Investigation Unit of the Nigeria Police Force.
He said the unit has nationwide jurisdiction to investigate complex, sensitive and high-profile crimes and the arrest was carried out in accordance with due process and police constitutional responsibility.

CLARIFICATION ON THE ARREST OF ABUBAKAR GOSSIMA
The attention of the Jigawa State Police Command has been drawn to a misleading report circulating on various media platforms, claiming that one Abubakar Gossima was arrested by operatives of the Jigawa State Police Command for political reasons.
For the purpose of clarity and record correction, the Command wishes to state unequivocally that the arrest of Abubakar Gossima was carried out by the operatives of Special Investigation Unit of the Nigeria Police Force.
The special unit has nationwide jurisdiction to investigates complex, sensitive and high-profile crimes. The arrest was carried out in accordance with due process and police constitutional responsibility.
The Jigawa State Police Command, under the leadership of Commissioner of Police CP Dahiru Muhammad, psc, fdc, is committed to maintaining professionalism, transparency and synergy with all units of the Nigeria Police Force and Sister Security Agencies to ensure safety and security of the state.
