The spokesperson of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Wilson Uwujaren, has said that the general public should beware of fraudsters using the name of ranking officials of the agency to obtain money from unsuspecting members of the public.
“In recent weeks, there have been reported cases of criminal gangs using the names of the Commission’s Director of Operations, Olaolu Adegbite, and the Executive Chairman, Ibrahim Lamorde, to extort money from persons purported to have petitions pending before the Commission,” he said.
Mr. Owujaren noted that “it is not the practice for officials of the Commission to seek payment or other forms of gratification from anyone, be he/she under investigation or not.”
He therefore warned the public to be wary of these fraudsters, saying “members of the public are strongly advised to report any solicitation for bribes in any guise by persons claiming to be officials or fronts for officials of the Commission to any of its offices in Abuja and across the zones or to the nearest police station.”
The spokesperson added that the Commission is intensifying efforts to track down members of the criminal gangs behind the illegal solicitations.
