Former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s faction of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ogun State on Tuesday got the final nod from the state electoral commission to contest the July local government polls.

The Commission’s screening Chairman, Mutiu Agboke, made this known at a press briefing in Abeokuta. He pointed out that the commission had contacted the national body of the party and had been directed to recognize the former President’s faction, led by one Ireti Oliyide

The party has been entangled in a serious crisis which resulted in it presenting two lists before the state electoral commission ahead of the local government election in the state.

The case had been pending before an appeal court in Lagos; however, the state election umpire declared that, it will go ahead with the election and recognize Mr. Obasanjo’s faction based on the directive of the national body.

Mr. Agboke posited that with the national headquarters directive, all controversies, anxieties and misconceptions will be put to rest. He added that the commission was ready to give a level playing field to all the parties who have shown interest in the election.

“The commission has sought clearance from the national headquarters as a result of series of issues that have arisen over time and by virtue of that, the commission for the purpose of that election is going to recognize the faction led by Mr. Ireti Oliyide.

“I think with this pronouncement, the Ogun State Independent Electoral Commission will put to rest all the anxieties, all the confusions and all the misconceptions and I think the members of the public will be able to bear with us and be able to understand our plight,” Mr. Agboke declared.

On Monday, a Lagos High Court made a pronouncement stopping the electoral body from further actions on the election pending the determination of suit brought before it by a faction of the PDP.

Mr. Agboke however described the court as Obita Dicta, adding that the pronouncement of the court will be appealed.

He reiterated the commitment of the electoral body to conduct the election as scheduled, adding that both local and international organizations have shown interest in assisting the commission.
