The Chairperson of the African Union (AU) Commission, Jean Ping, on Tuesday congratulated Mohammed Morsi, on his election as the President of Egypt.
In a congratulatory letter, Mr. Ping also congratulated the people of Egypt on the peaceful manner in which they conducted themselves during and after the election.
“The peaceful election represents an important milestone for Egypt and demonstrates the desire of the people of Egypt for freedom and democracy in their country”, Mr. Ping said.
He reiterated the commitment of the AU to assist the people of Egypt to fully consolidate the democratisation process in the country.
“This development in Egypt further demonstrates Africa’s continuous path to strengthen democracy and its desire to build strong and independent institutions’’, he said
