Ogun PDP crisis: Obasanjo loses

The Ogun State Chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party{PDP} supported by former President, Olusegun Obasanjo, lost its bid to enlist candidates for the forthcoming local government elections.

An Ogun State High Court on Tuesday ruled against Mr. Obasanjo’s faction of the PDP.

The PDP faction led by party chairman Bayo Dayo and businessman, Buruji Kashamu, had instituted a case against Obasanjo’s group, praying the court to recognize its faction as the authentic PDP in the state.

Premium Times had earlier reported that the crisis between the two groups got to a high when they both got different injunctions from different courts in the state authenticating each of them.

However, the State High Court sitting in Ilaro ruled, Tuesday, that the PDP faction by Mr. Dayo has the vested authority to nominate and submit list of candidates for the forthcoming local government election in the state.

The high court judge, Mosunmola Dipeolu, held that section 60 (10) of the PDP constitution, conferred the authority to run the affairs of the state branch of the party executive committee.

Similarly, the Court restrained the national headquarters of the PDP from submitting any other candidates’ list apart from the one submitted by the state executive committee under Mr. Dayo.

She further ruled that the party’s constitution sets up its organs with various functions and that there is no inter-lapping of functions; hence, the National
Executive Council (NEC) of the party should allow the state’s ex-co to perform its duties without any interference of the parent body.

Ms. Dipeolu dismissed the suit brought before it by the other faction of Ogun PDP which sought to compel OGSIEC to accept its candidates list for the council poll.
