Following the expiration of the deadline given to GSM service providers to pay penalties for poor service delivery, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has threatened to reprimand them.
Tony Ojobo, the NCC Director of Public Affairs, said in interview on Thursday, that the commission would reprimand defaulters if penalties were not paid.
He said that since the expiration of the deadline given to the service providers, none of them had made any payment, adding that the commission would take necessary action against them.
“One thing the regulator does is to deny the service providers access to regulatory services.
“And denial of regulatory services means that you cannot receive any request from the commission until the requirement has been fulfilled.
“Regulatory services is like asking for additional numbers and frequency addition among others,” Mr. Ojobo said.
He said that an official letter had been issued to the service providers by the commission drawing their attention to the fact that they were already in default.
On May 12, the NCC fined service providers N1.1 billion for poor services delivery and gave them a deadline of May 25 for payment.
“So we have entered the default period from May 26, counting from May 26 to anytime payment is made, it is N2.5 million per day of default,” Mr. Ojobo said.
On May 30, a meeting was held by the Chief Executive Officers of service providers with the Commission where N2.5 million was fixed as penalty charge for default.
