Adams Oshiomhole, the chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress, is not yet aware of what is happening at the Nigerian parliament, his spokesperson told PREMIUM TIMES.
The National Assembly was taken over by operatives of the State Security Service and police officers this morning. They initially prevented lawmakers from entering, but later allowed them following attempts to break in. Journalists and staff of the assembly had not been allowed to enter as at the time of this report.
The development, which is still underway, has sparked nationwide row, and some opposition voices like Atiku Abubakar have condemned it.
But Mr Oshiomhole was not yet aware of the situation, his spokesperson Simon Egbegbulem said.
“He has not been briefed about the matter and he is not a security officer,” Mr Egbegbulem told PREMIUM TIMES by telephone at 12:07 p.m. Tuesday.
“The Chairman is not even aware of what is happening at the National Assembly,” he emphasised. “He travelled yesterday and came back and not quite long he got back to the office”
“He has not been briefed by anybody,” he added.
Mr Oshiomhole has been accused of camping senators at Sheraton Hotels in Abuja, where he allegedly demanded that they must sign papers to remove Senate President Bukola Saraki from office.
Mr Egbegbulem also denied this allegation, dismissing it as part of opposition’s campaign of deceit.
