Atiku speaks on #EndSARS campaign by Nigerians

Atiku Abubakar has commended Nigerians for rising in unison to condemn alleged atrocities by the police Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).

Mr. Abubakar, a former vice-president and 2019 presidential hopeful, said harassment of citizens by policemen has no place in a democratic society.

“The arbitrary harassment of young Nigerians by Police (who should be protecting them) has no place in a democratic society,” Mr. Abubakar said.

The politician said he understood the plights of citizens who have been victims of alleged SARS brutality, especially the youth who are more vulnerable to harassment because SARS personnel often see them as Internet fraudsters whenever they carry laptops in their bags on the road.

“The #EndSARS protest shows Nigerian youth are upset and the matter needs urgent attention,” he said. “Everyday, we encourage our young people to become entrepreneurs. Buying a laptop to earn a living shouldn’t attract harassment.”

Mr. Abubakar’s reaction came a day after Nigerians started trending the #EndSARS hashtag to draw attention to alleged criminalities of SARS officers.

“I commend our young people for protesting these injustices peacefully online, and encourage the IG of @PoliceNG to take these complaints seriously.

“I also urge the National Assembly to look into these complaints, and address the human rights issues. Reforms are urgently needed,” Mr. Abubakar said.

A petition was also opened online for Nigerians to sign to force the National Assembly and President Muhammadu Buhari to scrap SARS and amend the police.

PREMIUM TIMES reported the campaign and how a police watchdog group, NOPRIN, had asked for SARS to be scrapped since 2010 after chronicling several cases of abuses by the department.

Police spokesperson, Jimoh Moshood, initially asked PREMIUM TIMES to ignore the campaigners, saying he would call back to give reactions to the allegations against SARS later on Saturday evening.

However, PREMIUM TIMES attempts to get his full reaction between Saturday night and Sunday morning didn’t work out as he didn’t pick phone calls.

Similarly, Hyacinth Dagala and Umar Shehu, the Deputy Inspector-General and Assistant Inspector-General in charge of Criminal Investigation Department, did not answer PREMIUM TIMES phone calls and text messages seeking their comments Sunday morning.

Desperate Atiku will tomorrow comment on the bedroom crisis of my neighbors so that he can remain in the media. For a man that was a top Security officer during the Shagari era when the mobile force was then referred to as Kill and Go, yet he never uttered a word of condemnation , for a person that was Vice President for eight good years when Udi, Zaki biam and other atrocities took place yet his voice was not heard in condemnation of the acts, yet shamelessly he has now been folllowing all breaking news to comment on . This desperation will not change his political position of always coming a distant third , behind MKO and Kingibe and behind Buhari and Kwankwasoo.

    • Tunsj

Shahokaya – Wow! Spectacularly spoken truth. Desperate Atiku thinks that Nigerians are blind.

    • tundemash

What a feeble mind you are!
What did Atiku do about this problem when he was V.P. for 8 years? Who was V.P. when Odi was invaded and what was his comment then ? Who was V.P. when Harry Marshall was killed and what was his comment then ?

Haha….Atiku will agree on anything as long as it is against the present administration he intends to go against. It is a strategy nontheless but one we are plum tired of. The APC, PDP, ROT and the lot of them are made up of the same political ilk. Come 2019, Nigerians let’s start asking pertinent questions like how whoever wants our votes intends to give us 24 hrs power? Indepth questions like how much, time for frame, strategy to they intend to use to build up our Par capita income, taxation, how they intend bringing in more investments rather than going out there to beg the western countries to come in and fleece us bare! The present administration isn’t handling the issues well maybe the PDP or anoyher party has the candidate worth our while, maybe not but the fact is that we Nigerians, we have to fight for better leadership and make these politicians understand we cannot be bought with cheap promises like before

    • Timothy

But these questions can not be answered by men on the street selling spare parts or working in the banking sector or oil sector or teaching in a classroom. The information to build Nigeria is dependent on what is on ground and I can bet outside the political governing class….no one else knows……if we do a bet today a let someone like Peter Obi get into govt you will find him making a lot of excuses because he is not aware of the rot in the system….and he needs people to guide him….and guess what? He will fall back on those who have been there and knows the system more to guide him….we are stuck either way but we will get there

    • Tony Ani

      Correct.

  • curseless

Watch out! It s becoming obvious by day to see how Atiku is scheming in his attempt to get the youth”s attention. This man was in PDP before and the record shows that he was not advancing the cause of the youth then and sincerely hope that the youth will not bite this bait
