Amaechi tackles Jonathan, says former president failed Igbo people

Chibuike Amaechi
Minister of Transport, Rotimi Amaechi

Nigeria’s transport minister, Rotimi Amaechi, on Tuesday said the Igbos did not benefit from the support they gave to former president, Goodluck Jonathan.

Mr. Amaechi said this in Ikeja, Lagos, at a forum held to discuss the importance of social media in the polity.

Mr. Amaechi, who commented on the support the former president enjoyed from the Igbo people, said Mr. Jonathan failed them in spite of his numerous promises.

“The Igbos gave Jonathan support, what did he do for you?” Mr. Amaechi asked, rhetorically.

“Of course!” he said in response to chant of “Nothing!” by some members of the audience.

“President Jonathan went to Onitsha and danced and promised to construct Onitsha bridge. Right? After that nothing happened,” he said.

“Now we are fixing the bridge without making promise. Or did we promise to construct Onitsha bridge? I didn’t hear him (Mr. Buhari) say he would construct Onitsha bridge during the campaign…except someone spoke on his behalf.

“Today we are constructing the second bridge…which is the River Niger bridge,” Mr. Amaechi said.

The former Rivers state governor who served on the umbrella of the Peoples’ Democratic Party, PDP, said that party stalwarts from the south east region should be ashamed that they were seeing the president five times in a day and they could not get the road constructed.

“The relevance of a politician is not determined by how much he has in his pocket. It is determined by how much development he is able to bring…,” he said.

“The Port Harcourt-Owerri road was terrible. One day I made the mistake as governor to try to go to Owerri and I passed through Aba. I wept. Now we are constructing that road; it may not be at the speed that you want but we are constructing the road. The next road I mentioned is the Enugu-Onitsha.

“We are doing Port Harcourt-Enugu, the most important road to the Igbo. The next most important road to the Igbo is Enugu to Onitsha, and he (Mr. Buhari) is doing it again… So who is better?

“The last man you people were dancing with at Onitsha bridge that promised you people that ‘Azikiwe commissioned this bridge and the second Azikiwe commissioned it again’ and never put a stone and the man who doesn’t talk at all… who didn’t make promise and he is doing it, which one do you prefer?”

“Don’t be deceived by those who depended on government alone for survival,” he said.

On internal wrangling within the ruling APC, he said it was expected because the party, being the ruling party, has huge number of members, especially in states where elections are being held.

Commenting on a question on whether Mr. Buhari will be accepted by people in the Northeast or not, Mr. Amaechi explained that the people of the region who have been liberated from the violence of Boko haram now appreciate the president better.

He specifically mentioned the people of Maiduguri who, according to him, have regained a new life since the president took over.

He also noted that the turn out would be higher than what they experienced in 2015 if the president decides to visit the region in 2017.

On corruption, Mr. Amaechi said the only way the government could tackle the menace is if it jailed those caught in the act.

“The only way to solve corruption in Nigeria is if you send ten rich men to jail,” he said.

“That is the key to fighting corruption.”

  • Fadama

    Amaechi is absolutely right.

  • Wale

    There you go.
On your next executive meeting tell them that Nigerians would like to see corrupt people in jail, else, we’ll vote you guys out, but no PDP, we tried that before, and it didn’t work.

    • Julius

Well said…we will exercise our right !!

  • PolyGon2013

igbo still love Jonathan. That is the way the elders in Igbo want him to behave. Give them positions so that they can pocket in a lot of money. Ibos are thieves. They do not deserve to be given any positions. However, we will help them build their roads.

    • Justice Equity

The list of those who stole the most during Jonathan government have been published by EFCC,check out the names ,obanikoro, fayoshe,FFK,dasuki, amosu,Mohammed, osoba,Yoruba obas, oke, yakubu, omokore, metu etc.please how many of them are ibos.

  • SAM .A

Jonathan Dumbo Azikwe , the guy the Igbos voted for massively , who promised them heaven and earth , including Onitsha bridge , and didn’t fulfill a single one is still admired and defended by them , however PMB that didn’t promise them and is now constructing so many roads and even Niger Bridge at Onitsha under dynamic Rotimi Ameachi . Today they called him so many names and and started Biafraud agitation to destablize him , which they did not do under Dumbo Azikwe .This speaks volumes , showing their heart of ingratitude .

  • Rollingdollar

Where exactly does this online Yoruba attack dogs belong. In one breath, they claim Jonathan only worked for the Igbos. In another breath, they agree with Amaechi that Jonathan did nothing for the igbos. Yoruba what’s your stand? Igbos only want justice and equal opportunity. Dazzol

    • musa aliyu

Equal opportunity in what? When U held sway with jonadumb did U remember giving Yoruba’s and Hausas equal opportunity? A beg go smaoke ur crack and continue thinking of ur next kidnap target!!!

    • Mufu Ola

Jonathan only gratified the few Igbo elites not the masses. That’s the fact not fiction.

      • Julius

They are the ones behind kanu and ipob after they lost out in the last election.

  • T-Rex

Hmmmmmmmm, he is right. President Jonathan failed the entire south east and south south big time! I still do not like Bubu though,i think VP Osinbajo can perform better than Oga Bubu if he becomes the President.

    • Gary

He might have failed the masses but the politicians and business class thrived under the PDP; just as the party was set up to do.
Check out the mansions in Abuja and Ikoyi-Lekki, the private jets and huge fortunes amassed by this class of people across the country, including the Igbos; then come back and tell us that GEJ and his party did not do anything. Aliko Dangote and others who enjoyed import duty waivers will certainly not agree with you.

      • T-Rex

How does the private jets and mansions in Ikoyi and Abuja translate to good motorable roads, steady power supply, potable water and job creation in the South South/South East regions? President GEJ govt did empower some individuals across the nation but he should have done more in terms of infrastructure in his core regions. Is it not a shame that even Otuoke, his home town, does not have a good access road or potable water? Most of us from the Niger Delta supported him coz he is our own,not because we benefited from him in any way!

        • Gary

We have no disagreement in the main. You are focused on who Jonathan did not help while I’m pointing out that the PDP was never set up to help the masses but the elite. Including the Igbos whose elite similarly benefited from Jonathan.

Hence both OBJ and GEJ constantly bragged about the many billionaires and private jet owners who flourished during their rule.

  • musa aliyu

They pass the shit that smells; they pack it!

    • Justice Equity

Buhari is an evil ,his government is filled with heartless men and women, no wonder God have given him a reserve bench to sleep until his game is over and his allotted time finished.

      • musa aliyu

Don’t worry. Arewa would be called tov give U ur dose !

  • Onye Obosi

Do the Igbos really know what they want? That is the question.
Those guys clamoring for biafra only want a destabilized situation so they can carry on with their nefarious activities.

Those Igbos shouting biafra do not want road, of bridges, they a situation whereby, Okeke, Chukwuemeka, or Osita, can be able to pass through the airport unchecked, with a load of drugs stuffed in his stomach, or underneath his shoes. They want a situation where, an Evans can be able to conduct his kidnapping business without being busted, or an Ifeanyi Ubah selling the country’s petroleum product that was kept under his custody without being questioned. Because, to them, money rules.

    • Frank Bassey

If you belong to this category Sir; others do not.

  • Justice Equity

Amaechi is a liar,I am from anambra state, chibuke amaechi is a man without any atom of fear of God,he is not afraid that one day he will stand before God Almighty to give account of his life on earth.
The truth is that Nigerian leaders from babangida until obj were playing games with the second Niger bridge until Jonathan came. The most fraudulent of them all was obj who came to Onitsha in April 2007 ,in the company of Andy uba, etiaba and delta state Governor and flagged off the construction the bridge without a contractor, nor any design nor any contract. It was the most wicked fraud any president shall ever commit.
Jonathan became president and awarded the contract for the design of the bridge, did the EIA for the bridge, called for the bidding for the bridge under PPP ,saw through the bid process and completed all protocols about the project, and finally awarded the contract, mobilized Julius Berger who was the bid winner with the sum of 18b naira out of the 31b federal government 30% contribution for the project, and Julius Berger mobilized to the site and commenced the construction of the bridge with ferocious speed accomplished 40% job progress until buhari came and ordered Julius Berger to stop work .the order to Julius Berger to stop work on the bridge was given on June 2015 by the FG under the pretense that buhari said that they are subjecting the contract papers to scrutiny.
It was when Nigerians raised the alarm that buhari reluctantly said that he is mobilising Berger back to site and then shamelessly lying that he is the one building the bridge.
The truth is that up till April ending when I traveled to the bridge head at Onitsha where the Julius Berger construction yard for the bridge is located, the company is still deserted as it was since June 2015 when buhari stopped the work at Niger bridge.
If Amaechi should lie about physical ,verifiable issue like second Niger bridge, I wonder what he does with things that are not visible to Nigerians.
May God reward this axis of evil government for all the wickedness they are doing to Nigerians and covering it up with paid media propaganda.
Shame to Nigerian media who had sold their souls and conscience to this integrity deficit government.

    • Gary

Thank you for exposing Rotimi Amaechi, the only ex-Governor in Nigeria who has an allergy to money.
This is the way this guy brazenly lies that even Lai Mohammed is put to shame by his smooth delivery.
Anyone would think that this Judas in designer outfits was never a PDP member, much less a stalwart of the party he now shamelessly denounces.
Lest anyone is fooled, every infrastructure project currently undertaken by the APC government was initiated by the Jonathan government.
That includes the Second Niger Bridge, the national rail network and the new terminal building at the Lagos Airport.
Give the devil his due: GEJ condoned corruption by his party but he laid the foundation for the rebuilding of infrastructure in Nigeria.

      • Mufu Ola

“…….every infrastructure project currently undertaken by APC govt was initiated by Jona govt….” What do u expect? As a responsible govt Buhari FG have to complete or continue projects on ground even if Jonathan merely initiate them on paper & have no intention of executing them.

        • Gary

          eRat,
Thanks for affirming my position, even if that was not what you intended.

“Propaganda works best when those who are being manipulated are confident that they are acting on their own free will”Joseph Goebbels. Gary I am surprised that you are accepting the trash posted by the so-called Justice Equity without any evidence like pictures to back up his claim. You are too sophisticated to jump at his propaganda and accept it as the truth.

        • Gary

Go ahead and explain to rational folks how a government that was unable to name a cabinet in six months managed on its own to design and award the contracts for the Second Niger Bridge in 18months.
Again, I maintain that the projects currently being undertaken by the APC were initiated by the preceding government. That is an incontrovertible fact that only the gullible can be swayed by the brazen lies of Amaechi and the propaganda minions of the BMC.

          • Lakeside

I am not denying the fact that Big Joe’s government did the groundwork for the bridge but for you accepting what the daft bible preaching yet abusive poster wrote about 40%completion is what baffled me.

          • Justice Equity

The truth is that work has commenced on the Second Niger Bridge and is progressing. The project, which is divided into three phases, will bypass Onitsha and Asaba to connect the Owerri-Onitsha Expressway at Nkwerre-Ezunaka, and then cross Atani to the Asaba-Benin Expressway at Okpanam with a total length of 44 kilometres. With this length, the Second Niger Bridge will surpass the world’s longest bridge in China (42.4km), to become the world’s longest bridge!

The project is being constructed under a Public Private Partnership (PPP) scheme. A Consortium JB-NSIA, is working on the project on the basis of Design, Build, Finance, Operate and Transfer (DBFOT), at a total cost of N108 billion. The Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP) reviewed the concessionaire’s cost of N138 billion down to N108 billion. The project phases will be constructed under Engineering, Procurement and Construction contracts awarded by the Federal Ministry of Works (FMW).

The Federal Government committed to contribute N30 billion (28%) of the project cost. The remaining 72% will be raised by the Consortium under a 25-year concession. The Federal Government has so far committed N18.31billion. Out of this, N10.4 billion has been disbursed leaving a balance of N7.94 billion. A team of local and international consultants was engaged through a rigorous and competitive procurement process. The NSIA has spent the sum of $2.21 million on consultancy and another $247,586 on due diligence to determine project viability. The first-class advisory services are required to enable the project reach financial close – the point at which private capital is successfully raised.

    • Mufu Ola

You think Jonathan govt was 100 years ago or what? That we can’t remember what happened? The contract for that bridge was awarded towards d time of election for election purposes by Jonathan govt & where did u get the 40% work rate from? As if it was being built on the moon where people will not see it. For all d revenue Jonathan realized during his tenure, the fact that he cannot reasonably complete any project in SE makes Igbo adoration of him silly. But of course I personally don’t believe they love GEJ as such.Igbo just have a sense of loss for backing a wrong horse & being left behind by other big players. That’s their agony not really Jonathan’s misery.

      • Justice Equity

Jonathan remains the best president that Nigeria ever had since independence, those who hate , hated him because he broke the satanic unwritten agreement of the workers of iniquity in Nigeria to keep out a geopolitical zone of Nigeria perpetually out of the inner circle of power and government of Nigeria.
Jonathan’s appointment of ibos to the inner circle of government of Nigeria is the only sin he committed against this heartless liars for which they want to go to any length no matter how ridiculous to lie, blackmail and peddle hateful falsehood against Jonathan.
Obasanjo ruled Nigeria for 8 solid years, what project did he complete in the whole of south west, yet yorubas worship him and adore him as navigator.
Because Jonathan came from south south whom they thought that he has no mind of his own,but now they want to commit suicide because Jonathan broke their mischief evil agreement against ibos.
Till eternity, ibos shall continue to accord honor and dignity to a man who looked on them with love, passion and mercy, a man who truly gave them a sincere sense of belonging to Nigeria after shagari and NPN.
May God bless his servant Jonathan. Ibos are not the treacherous Judas Iscariot chameleons that back stabs a friend when he is under fire.

Buddy you could have provided pictures of your 40% 2nd Niger Bridge construction by Big Joe (Jonathan) to support your claim. “A lie told once remains a lie but a lie told a thousand times becomes the truth.” Joseph Goebbels.

      • Justice Equity

I should provide pictures of work done by Julius Berger on second Niger bridge on disqus ,for you to believe the truth?, well thats how badly depraved your conscience could be.

Your generation hate truth and can do anything to undermine the truth.

        • Julius

I am from Anambra State and Anambra North to be precise where the Bridge is located. Please tell yourself the truth so that your linage will be liberated. I hate to join issues but hate lies ,just like the one you have stated here. Send this forum a photo of the 40% work . A bridge with total cost of 130 Billion Naira and GEJ in his character released only 10Billion Naira which was used for moving equipment’s to the site and the company has left the site since so where is the work done by GEJ..He promised to include Anambra State in the oil producing state he never signed it until he was booted out of office by his failure. PMB never make promises on River Niger Bridge and no one pressured hhim into doing it and such i expect you to be thankful and grateful and stop this stone age politicis because Government is continuum .AMECHI spoke the truth and as Anambra In law he will see to the comletion of that Bridge .Your GEJ is full of Empty Promises and that is why he is called MR. I WILL

The truth is that work has commenced on the Second Niger Bridge in 2014 and was progressing in 2015 until buhari maliciously halted the work and ordered the contractor to abandon the site. So, Igbo feel better under Buhari? Is that what you are saying? You are a dehydrated lizard. Your bid to secure the VP slot after being the heaviest financier of APC to install PMB should teach you a lesson by now.

So when an individual did better by stashing their development monies into their private overseas bank it means the whole Igbo did better under Jonathan ?

  • Bright Ezeh

Justice equity please where did you get this your figure from 18 billion out 31billion please your figure is false you can visit ministry of works to confirm your figures, lam not a supporter of amaechi because he is corrupt also like Jonathan, the truth is that Jonathan did not do anything for the lgbo’s all the roads amaechi mentioned are the major roads in the south East but Jonathan did not touch any of them the truth is that Jonathan dissapointed the lgbo’s period, the lgbo’s did not benefit any thing from Jonathan

    • Gary

If the Igbos did not benefit from Jonathan, maybe you should the likes of NOI, Stella Oduah, Pius Anyim, Gen. Ihejirika, Emeka Offor, Barth Nnaji, the Uba brothers, the Igbo PDP Governors and Godwin Emefiele why?
It was certainly not due to be being underrepresented in the Jonathan government as the Igbos fared better than even his own people.
And it was the fact of the Igbos holding plum positions in that government that aroused the courted the opposition of Tinubu and his Yoruba who felt frozen out of the cake sharing at the federal level. The rest as they say, is history.
It is not Jonathan’s fault that Southerners in high positions are too cowardly to bring the bacon home to their own people. Now we see how Buhari and his fellow Northerners are shoveling all the federal goodies home. Ask the folks in Abeokuta what infrastructure OBJ gave them in eight years? The Obasanjo Presidential Library- a shrine to himself.
And what did he do for Lagos? Nothing. Instead he blocked the attempt to set up an independent power system for the state (and Rivers too) because he was fighting Tinubu.

This is all recent history so tarry awhile before attempting any revisionism.

  • Bright Ezeh

Jonathan dissapointed the south East and south south, thank God Dickson said it recently, the region needs another chance to produce a president but not Jonathan type

Wht else is new with Mr Amechi assertations above regarding GEJ n SE ppl affections for him? GEJ did paid about $230million for consultations n design 4the 2nd River niger bridge less than a year 2the election — did any sensible person believed any constrution took place when d politicians/leaders were busy stealing n also spending money for elections?

Ameachi spoke WELL n he was specific wth his verifiable points above! BUT MY SE ppl will still vote 4 that GEJ 95% again if another election was suppose to hold today DESPITE FACTS LISTED ABOVE AGAINST JONATHAN. AND THIS BIAFRA AGITATION WULDNT AN ISSUE TODAY TOO IF GEJ HAD BN RE-ELECTED ALSO.

Let us be honest with ourselves in Nigeria for once and stop being tribalistic. The people that created Massob/Ipob were the Igbo selfish leaders since the military and civilian eras who got trillions of dollars and Naira contracts to execute various infrastructural projects in the SE but never executed them. Thesame thing is happening in the SS where their leaders are improverishing their people. The reason why many SW people are against OBJ is cos we expected him to take Nigeria to greater heights during his second coming cos we have standards by which we judge our leaders.
