The palace of the Ooni of Ife, Adeyeye Ogunwusi, has reacted to the humiliating treatment meted out to him by the Oba of Lagos, Rilwan Akiolu, at a public function in Lagos on Tuesday.

A video of the incident which went virile on social media showed the Lagos monarch refusing to shake hands with the Ooni, who arrived the venue of the event while guests were already seated.

The Ooni, on entering the hall, went straight to greet traditional rulers, but Oba Akiolu shunned him and with a wave of the hand, gestured his rejection of the Ooni’s greetings.

The Ooni however, took the incident with calm and took his seat on the same roll where the traditional ruler was seated.

Speaking with PREMIUM TIMES on the development, the Head of Palace Directorate of Tourism, Awoyemi Tunde, said the Ooni of Ife was not losing sleep over the issue.

“It is not a slap on the Ooni of Ife but rather a slap on the Oba of Lagos,” he said. “The stool of Oba of Lagos was founded by Olofin Ogunfunminire and the Ooni of Ife is the Oba of Yoruba land.

“The Oba of Lagos has to come to terms with the fact that Ooni is the royal father of Yoruba land, it is necessary that all persons come together to unite Yoruba land but really the issue at the event is very condemnable”.

Mr. Tunde also said that the Oba of Lagos risked the wrath of the ‘Alale'(Ancestors), as a result of his disrespect for the superior monarch.

“God gave Ooni of Ife Oba Enitan Ogunwusi, Ojaja II, the mandate to unite the Yoruba land and nothing will stop him from doing that,” he added.

According to Mr. Tunde, reactions from different Yoruba communities would continue to pour in to denounce the action of the Lagos monarch.

“If we don’t receive an apology especially with the image of Ile-Ife, we will call on the ancestors on the issue,” he said.

Leave Ancestors out of this. Tell Ooni to reduce his outings. You don’t have to go everywhere. Ibi Gerewu la n ba agba (elders are found in respected positions).

Even Emir of Kano (Sanusi) is following suit.

These are highly respected positions and these occupants should treat them as such, irrespective of their youthfulness.

    • Tunmishe Oke

You hit the nail on the head bro. Se ara e la’agba (Treat yourself like the elder you have become;my slant..lol)

    • Lanre

Thank you. I have never commented on this useless report. People are dying and yet you have these human beings huffing and puffing over nothing. Do they not have blood running through them or what makes them special?

  • Lanre

The Ooni of Ife like the Emir of Kano needs to go and sit down somewhere. If he likes let him marry every young maiden from every state in their Nigeria. That is his problem. Nothing to do with the advancement of Yorubas.

    • tundemash

Cl0wn, do you think what the Oba of Lagos did is right ? What exactly is Ooni’s fault that you asked him to go and sit down? If this was done to Ooni by the Sultan of Sokoto, you won’t ask Ooni to go and sit down but you would have been here wailing about some imaginary Yoruba slavery just to progress your divisive and devilish tendencies. Olodo ! If you are Yoruba at all, I doubt that, you belong to the outcasts and bast@rds like FFK, Fayose, Bode George, etc.

      • Otile

        Abubakar tundemash.

Hankali, ba hankali. Mr Akiolu may be a mumu but he knows the tradition better than you. He knows that his obaship derives from Bini Kingdom not from Ife Kingdom. He shouldn’t be shaking hands with Ooni because he knows that when a Yoruba (Ife) oba dies innocent people are buried alive with the dead king, Bini people cannot practice that kind of barbarity for their dead Oba. Mumu Oba lives in Lagos which is a very advanced place in Nigeria. When he called on Igbo people to be drowned in Lagoon he was doing it to please his master Imam Buhari, not that he meant it. Abubakar, what happened to that Igbo man in Eko, Joe Igbokwe, did you betray him? Kabiyesi Lagos Allah ya gafata mallam oo.

Oba of Lagos knows many atrocities committed by this so called ooni and many victims of ooni frauds have severaly seeks his intervention without solution. Ooni is using the stool as a cover up but very soon everything will be let out. Don’t say Fulani is at it again that time. This Ooni is a great disaster.

How?. Are you smoking the same thing as Oba of Lagos?

  • Malik Isah

Dear Ooni and Palace Aides, i think the earlier (reported) response by the Ooni was sufficient and you may have noticed that you have the support of the generality of the populace. pleaase let’s leave it at that to avoid spoiling a good case.

    • Otile

Don’t try to bury your head in the sand, try to understand tradition. You know very well that mumu Oba of Lagos know his rights too. He knows that he owes no allegiance to Ooni of Ife. Mumu Oba owes allegiance to Oba Bini not to Oba Yoruba. Lagos is a Bini Kingdom that gives refuge to Yorubas and other ethnic communities in one Nigeria. I may be insulted by those who don’t understand history but in this case mumu Oba knows his onion. Gbogbo ile e gbo mi nko?

      • Otile

…mumu Oba knows his rights oo.

      • Malik Isah

Otile, please direct your response elsewhere as it is not in any way related to my comment above.

Oba of Lagos has offended ALL Yorubas.

The height of the Oba’s disrespect for anyone was when he threatened the throw to lagoon of anyone who does not vote the current Governor of Lagos during the last election. Perhaps, he’s looking at the age of the current Ooni of Ife as “too junior” to partake at the council of elders!

  • Remi

As far as hierarchy goes, the Ooni of Ife is regarded as the
most senior elder brother of all Yoruba Obas, and they all defer to him as such.
Even the elder brother of the Oba of Lagos, the Alaketu of Ketu – who by the
way is on the other side of the border in Benin Republic – dare not do to the
Ooni, what the Oba of Lagos did to him. I have gone to this length, in order to
speak to our Igbo compatriots who took umbrage and hastily assumed their usual
persecution complex, when the Oba of Lagos issued an obviously unattainable
threat to drive Igbos in Lagos into the sea if they did not vote for Candidate
Ambode during the 2015 Governorship elections in Lagos. Regardless of the emptiness
of the threat, some of our Igbo compatriots went to the ridiculous extent of
filing a complaint (of rights abuse) at The Hague. Such people can now see that,
eccentric and childish outbursts and actions are characteristic of the Oba of
Lagos and that he not only does it to “others” but also to his own revered
elders; and that his conduct does not, in any way, represent or speak for the
