Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has clarified media reports that he is pushing for a Nigerian president of Igbo extraction in 2019.

In a recent interview with journalists, Mr. Obasanjo said he only made a passing analogy between the marginalisation of the people of Southeast and indigenes of Ogun West Senatorial District in Ogun State.

The former leader said he told a group of visiting Christian leaders some weeks ago that he would like to see an end to apparent marginalisation of people he mentioned, but did not say it must happen in 2019 —or 2023.

“Again, I did not say that. You people say whatever you want to say,” Mr. Obasanjo told journalists who met him in Abeokuta as part of the activities marking his 80th birthday.

Some media outlets had reported Mr. Obasanjo’s comment as a call for an Igbo presidency in 2019.

Some critics accused the former president of sectionalism.

A former governor of Akwa Ibom State, Victor Attah, described Mr. Obasanjo’s comments as “divisive”.

But Mr. Obasanjo said he never actually made such call.

“Look, Christian Association of Nigeria, Ogun State chapter, came to see me here. They asked me to brief them on the situation in Southern Kaduna.

“I have been briefed by Bishop Matthew Kukah who comes from that area. I have been briefed by General Martin-Luther Agwai who comes from that area. I gave them my own understanding of that issue.

“I told them the Southern Kaduna issue is both historical, cultural, religious and political. So if you now want to resolve the issue, you have to take all these issues together.

“And I said the problem is when we fail to attend to something the time we’re supposed to attend to it and then it boomerangs on our face, then we don’t have anybody to blame.

“I said, here in Ogun State, we have a bit of Southern Kaduna problem. I said since Ogun State was created, we have had four elected governors.

“We have three senatorial districts —east, central and west. It has rotated between east and central. And I said west has not had a governor.

“So I said I don’t know when you will get there, but if you don’t get there when you should get there and the west decides to go into agitation then you have yourself to blame.

“I said the same with Nigeria, at independence we had a country of tripod. The north, the east and the west. The north, majority tribe is Hausa-Fulani. The east, majority tribe is Igbo. The west, majority tribe is Yoruba.

“Hausa-Fulani in the north cannot complain. Yoruba, they cannot complain. Even those who didn’t vote for Obasanjo the first time, they had to accept later.

“I said the Igbo haven’t had that chance. Now, we must be mindful, that we do not ignore that. That must be taken care of.

“That’s all,” the former president added.

Baba it is too late o! Rochas has used your comment and Buhari’s ailment as recruitment tools for his kinsmen to defect to the APC to position themselves for 2019.

His brain dey go dey come.

  • Egbele Tom Amos

Baba don change gear! Lol in all sincerity he ought not mute this, beign an elder statesman.

  • Wale

Ok Ndigbo should go ahead and diffuse the clarification from the man himself.
Hate and sentiment no de win argument.

  • AyPoint Blank

Igbos dont even have to wait till 2019, I thought they’re agitating for Biafra Republic. Who will vote for Igbo President? Is it the Hausas they call cows or the Yorubas they label slaves? Una just start!!!

    • logmein2nite

Did you hear Igbo asking for Presidency? You wey your brother, the Ape of Ota, was president for 8 years, see how your head still be you. Igbo is talking about Biafra since 1967, not the president of the useless Zoological Republic.

      • AyPoint Blank

he dey ya body! hahahahahahahaha! Okoro!!!!!

      • okenwa

Nwanna gwa ha okwu. Ndi ara. Ihe Anyi choro bu biafra, anyi acho yi onye isi ala nigeria.

    • Acting Citizen of Nigeria

I challenge you to point at any Igbo on any social media who is asking for presidency (Apart from the politicians of course, that has never and would never call you by what you really are – cow, because they’re hoping to get your support). Igbos have long ago decided what they want, and it’s not the Nigerian presidency. Obj just realised that, and he’s smartly making a last-minute attempt to stop the train.

      Too late!

The mainstay of every political structure of any people is the youths. The Nigerian politicians (with theirs eyes wide open) has irredeemably lost the Igbo youths to Nnamdi Kanu’s ideology. The Igbo youth is on fire, and as Bob Marley said in RIDE NATTY RIDE – “…No water can stop this fire…”

      • okenwa

        Indeed too later bros.

    • So oju abe niko

You are mistaking the proclivity of IPOB supporting Igbo youths for the general Igbo consensus. There are many credible Igbos with wide appeal that could win presidency easily.

      • On what planet?

        • Intrepid

The planet lies in your mama’s SHOKOTO.

          • Trashy worthless tribe of flesh eating losers.

  • PolyGon2013

We don’t need igbo. They need to continue their agitation for Biafra. They cannot function in Nigeria. Nigeria will be better off without igbo.

    • Acting Citizen of Nigeria

I challenge you to post any comment by any Igbo on any social media who has ever asked for Igbo presidency. Just mention one.

      • Dr

OBJ, Nigeria ‘s dire devil is here again, no longer relevant in Aso Villa, singing a new song. When. When the relationship was smooth with PMB, the old man said “Thank God we have a President who listens” Now that the relationship is soar the old man is canvassing for Igbo Presidency. He has forgotten how he ploted and disgraced Prof. Fabian Osuji and Sen. Adolphus Wabara out of office. He has forgotten how he brazenly fought former Senate President, Ken Nnamani due to the Senator’s anti third term stand. These are individuals who would have been aspiring to become Presidents by now

        • Dr

OBJ is trying to impose himself as Nigeria ‘s Mandela. He should know that if he could not control late Yar’ adua and former President, Jonathan, controlling PMB, who became President on the platform of APC and not PDP, would be a difficult task

    • Otile

Amen. May God make their agitation come true. Verily verily they will be better without being subjected to Nigeria, but no reasonable person can say that Nigeria will be better off without them. Gaskiya ne.

      • Fraud
        Killer medication
and on and on oh yes the people needs igbo-biafra, we really do like a hole in the head we do.

    • Lieutenant

      • PolyGon2013

Would you prefer me to say that we need Igbo? Like I repeat, you guys just need to go with your agitation on Biafra. This is the only place from which you can function. Igbo-kwenu.

Obasanjo clarifies position on Igbo presidency

And Tomorrow headline on Premium Times:

Obasanjo: Why I clarified my position on Igbo presidency

    • Otile

If you have nothing reasonable to contribute why not shut the trap? Block me if you can as you are fond of threatening.

  • Lanre

Olusegun Obasanjo. There is no sick Hausa-Fulani that will appoint an Igboman as his vice. So forget your Igbo Presidency. And the people of Ogun State will not quarrel amongst themselves. As Yorubas they believe in merit. Your remark about Ogun State is a disgrace and insult to Chief Awolowo, Chief M.K.O Abiola, Chief Abraham Adesanya, Chief Bisi Onabanjo among may illustrious indigenes from that state. Please go and enjoy your birthday in peace and let Yorubas be!

    • So oju abe niko

Obasanjo is on point. A meritorious system does not always preclude a fair representation. If you know Awo and Abiola very well, you will know that they will support Obasanjo in highlighting the unfair underrepresentation of Yewa sector in the Ogun State governance.

      • ita ekpo

Why are you saying this as blind man. When the man you mention was killed. What did he say nor any word come out from his mouth. Instead he went and shake hand with IBB for a job weldone. Is it the type of person you compare to late abiola. Bro please don’t deceit yourself. But if would be the one late abiola will do all his best to see judgement come out. Mr obasanjo is an evil man.

  • Karl Imom

Has there never been an Igbo president in Nigeria? What about Zik and Ironsi? It is absurd to suggest that if the presidency does not come from a particular group of people, then that group is marginalized. If that is the standard for marginalization, then more than 300 ethnic groups in Nigeria are marginalized.

    • Tunsj

      Couldn’t agree more.

    • here here!

      what about;
      Ekiti presidency?
      Akoko presidency
      Koki presidency?

  • Du Covenant

Why do we continue to deceive ourselves that we are practicing democracy?. Where is the Nigerian electorate in this equation?. I thought in a democracy the citizen go out an vote for who they want to lead them?. I have no problems whatsoever having a President of Igbo extraction, let that person emerge and convince the Nigerian voters to vote fo him/her. I do not know why we are so inclined to arrange things in Nigeria, allow such a person to come up and campaign like anyone else and if the Nigerian voters believe such a candidate, why not?. A system where ‘God-Fathers’ must exist and wicked arrangements go on behind closed doors in the middle of the night is not a good system, this is why we have not made any progress!.

  • Igbo-biafra deserves their own country their own passport they’re nothing but a blithe on this Nation.

    They criminal minded people.

    • Intrepid

Tell me you are not one of those yariba credit card cloners? Or where you not born in OLUWOLE kingdom? Does the pics in that passport you are bragging with, not your superimposed image? Does it not belong to your late Baba? Criminality everywhere in yaribaland.

      • So you do believe that only the Yoruba’s harbor disdain for you what do you think we think of you in the north?

        • Intrepid

We think of you from the north as lazy parasites and under pant Bombers. I don’t want to live with people were I will constantly be watching my back for something to explode. Your people are the scum of the earth. Don’t you think so? Kanton Banza!

          • Iyamirin dan bansa!

          • Intrepid

Dangurugu. Go and cure your leprosy. Shaygay!

          • You will never be any thing in this country but a classless and worthless class of people, yara karuwa.

          • Intrepid

What are you in this country? Insignificant nothing to the rest of world. Where is the country you are talking of? The dark jungle? Quota system malam. Come and sing babi alah for me, lest you go hungry, you oil drunk parasite. Good for nothing. What was your cut off point to attend that under the tree madrasa? Kanwan Duri!

  • ita ekpo

Wetin this thief man is trying to say. Who care whether igbo or yuroba is your problem which will give you sleepless night. Do you think we look like people where you have saying for igbo president. We have past that old mind thinking. Look for what is interest you to look as if you have saying. Thank you. Your own people you can not control but your mind is to come and control biafrans but you fail worsely. You can take your people and do boy boy job for hausa fulani. But for biafrans we are on our way out from that slavery. You are saying this as if you forget about biafra you told us is dead. Did you really mean it. Where is biafra now. Are you still hearing it on air. That mean you would have no mouth talking about igbo. Mr president Obasanjo let me correct you on that divide and rule tactic. For your information tbere is nothing like igbo. We are all biafrans. You can go into your land and used that divide and rule tactic. You and hausa fulani have killed us where we all said enough is enough. Mr POB where dog have leak face is why you cannot be shamed. You think is to steal nigeria money, be this. Let us biafrans died ourself not like thief man hand as you. Ole baba.

  • patriot

i think the igbos want’s biafra then let them have it , they are the ones to lose Nigeria ,but you can’t bake your cake and have it ,if you want an igbo president then fight for it politically just like the hausa’s and yoruba’s did or even niger deltan’s .
gone are the days where presidency is zoned to a particular zone , Nigeria has moved on , strategies and make political affiliation , it was done since the first republic , you can do it and goodluck to you.
