Fayose attacks Obasanjo over ‘failed leadership’ comment

Ekiti State Governor, Ayo Fayose, has again rekindled the no love lost between him and former president, Olusegun Obasanjo, declaring that the latter erred when he asserted that his generation had failed Nigeria.

The governor said Mr. Obasanjo should speak for himself because a good number in his generation were shining lights for Nigerians.

Mr. Obasanjo, who spoke at a trade seminar organised by the Kaduna State Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture (KADCCIMA), on Monday, had stated that his generation had failed Nigeria in not being able to develop its economy as other nations had done.

He had however stated that his generation of leaders made up for their failure in ensuring a stable and united country under a democracy.

The former president also identified the problem of leadership as one of the major factors militating against the growth of the nation’s economy and the country.

In a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Idowu Adelusi, Mr. Fayose accused Mr. Obasanjo of attempting to distract and discourage Nigerians from squarely facing up to the task of fixing the economy and building Nigeria into a strong and virile nation.

He described the statement by Mr. Obasanjo as “sanctimonious, misleading, self-serving and discomfiting” saying it was not what the country needed at this time of economic recession.

“There is much suffering in the land. The people are hungry. Yet, one of those responsible for this unsavoury state of affairs relishes in adding insult to the people’s injury. He makes statements that are not only reckless but also untrue,” the governor said.

According to Mr. Fayose, rather than generalise, Obasanjo should speak for himself.

“Obasanjo, truly, has failed this country many times over but not all members of his generation failed this country,” he submitted.

“There are shinning lights in that generation that have served the nation well.

“How about Emeka Anyaoku, Wole Soyinka, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, Prof. Ayodele Awojobi? The list is endless and they are to be found in all the nooks and crannies of this country who belong in the same generation as Obasanjo and who have done this country proud.”

Mr. Fayose further said that Mr. Obasanjo wasted all the “golden opportunities” that he had to make this country great, first as a military Head of State and later as a two-term civilian president.

“It is too late in the day for him to now cry over other countries that have passed Nigeria by. This is mere crocodile tears when we realise that no other Nigerian leader had the opportunities that Obasanjo had to make this country great but he bungled them all,” the governor said.

“He should speak for himself and not rope his entire generation into his misadventure in governance. Here is a man who neither recognised nor encouraged any star except himself.

“He must shoot them down or disparage them. For him, Obafemi Awolowo was not patriotic; MKO Abiola was not the messiah Nigeria needed; Tinubu was a rascal; Jonathan was not good; and President Muhammadu Buhari did not understand economics.

“Only Obasanjo is good. Only Obasanjo fought and won the civil war. Only Obasanjo understands everything – from economics to military to foreign affairs.”

He accused Mr. Obasamjo of laying the foundation of corruption through his ill-fated third term bid, adding that billions of naira were used to bribe members of the National Assembly.

“Obasanjo should give us a break. There is no denying the fact that he failed the country. The least he can now do is leave us alone to clear the peculiar mess he and others of his ilk got this country into,” he said.

“Let him retire into obscurity; fade away from the limelight; and allow us our peace and serenity.”

SOMETHING TELLS ME that should Nigeria descend into chaos
on current metrics of unliveability facing 80% of the populace who live
on honest wages and on profits from small business, the next fate that
would await General Olusegun Obasanjo will not be the rogue impunity
he asserts whenever summoned by the National Assembly to account for
16 billion dollars he took and said he used to provide non-existent electricity.
Obasanjo could face the worst fate of rough-handling by well-armed militias
who’ll likely launch a bloody revolution Nigeria soon should symptoms persist.

      @opekete:disqus ,

When an African is accused in court by his own son of incest and affidavit evidence is sworn to verify the truth

of that incest, the father who slept with that son’s wife is immediately ostracized, and no Premium Times is allowed

to slyly give him a right of audience under merest pretext of interview on a current affairs issue of importance.

I don’t like Fayose’s politics and his sometimes uncivilized manner of expressing his views about other people’s views and politics. However I like his no hold barred response to Obasanjo’s sanctimonious rethorics. Fayose is right on the money and I joined him to call on OBJ to drift into the oblivion of ignominy because he lacks the radical progressive thought to move the nation forward.

  • AFRICANER

Fayose is right, and Obasanjo is wrong.

People like Obasanjo, as far as I’ve observed in other countries, thrive because they are British spies. Or CIA agents.

Nothing ever happens to them, as they run around the country and the world, stunting Africa’s progress. They worship oyinbo, but are ruthless to progressive elements such as Fayose.

Obasanjo has been thanked and excused. y Nigerians, but he us stubbornly all over the place because he is imposed from outside.

Which of these people ever won the confidence of Nigerians enough to become President?
Which of them introduced mobile telecoms and our largest ever non-oil economic boom?
Which of them has left $60bn savings for Nigeria?
Which of them paid off all our international debt?
Which of them banished military coups by reforming the armed forces?
Which of them led the final effort to defeat Biafra and accepted their instrument of surrender?
Only OBJ has these achievements and they are part of the reasons OBJ is the GREATEST LIVING NIGERIAN.
Please feel free to list your achievements or those of any single person you think is greater.

We need someone to slap OBJ in a public to keep him shot up if he refuses to take Fayose advice seriously

  • Ohnigeria Godsavenigeria

When I remember the ugly face of obasanjo on NTA on that unforgettable day when the charges for his conspiracy with his brethren to overthrow abacha was read to him, obj was so overwhelmed with fear that he looked like awo on that fateful day when he sniffed rat poison at ikene.
On a more serious note, obj is a very big stakeholder amongst the generation that wilfully and treacherously destroyed Nigeria and made Nigeria to become a waste, a huge calamity and a hopeless giant with a clay foot and legs suffering from elephantiasis.
Obj particularly is one man that devil has been using to undermine the peace and prosperity of Nigeria, another one is Buhari.
It was obasanjo that proffered to give power to an unprepared shagari to waste great opportunities for Nigerian nation in 1979 to 1983 ,it was the same obj that supported ibb to put Nigerian nation on a revers gear with the annulment of June 12 elections, it was obj that destroyed pdp with his preference for thugs like Adedibu, Uba,saraki ,etc to take over pdp over reasonable pdp founders like ekwueme, rimi, lar, adenyi etc.
It was obj that brought about do or die politics in this republic. It was obj that began bribery of legislative houses with Ghana must go bags filled with money.
It was obj that destroyed the well structured power rotation of pdp that would have stabilized peace in Nigeria, when in his hate of Nigerians for denying him third term cunning craftily imposed a terminally sick yardua on Nigeria and put behind him a Jonathan who have no courage to rule Nigerian nation.
Buhari was younger and more healthy in 2007,why did obj go for a terminally sick yardua whom he obj is very much aware of his medical records. If Nigeria must make progress, the likes of obj ,Buhari, ibb, gown, danjuma etc must either leave Nigeria alone or Nigeria must leave them alone.
A generation that believes in cheating, lying, hypocrisy, hate, deceit, marginalization, clannishness, extoling mediocrity above competence, corruption, polygamy and monopoly of power.
That is an evil generation that must give way for Nigerian nation to make progress.

    • systematic

guy you don’t make any reasonable point here. u are just talking and condemning people that work hard for this nation.change your view

      • Ohnigeria Godsavenigeria

My friend, I never intended to make any reasonable point to citizens like who has been primed to say BABA OOO or SAI BABA to wicked oppressors who looted your past and are looting your present and your future.
These guys were given positions of trust by Nigeria and they misused the trust of Nigerians, looted our patrimony and made themselves fat cows and gods yet some Nigerian citizens for the reason of tribal and partisan bigotry worship them as gods and shamelessly try to confuse other Nigerians to follow up with their shameful ways.

        • Okokondem

What you just said exemplifies why Nigeria has failed as a nation because everyone is an apologist to looters of the same tribe, party or religion. It’s only a crime when the perpetrators are not people they identify with based on these criteria. We have been cheated by the people entrusted with leadership in Nigeria. I agree with you totally.
