No corrupt person will lead Nigeria again, Lagos Oba Akiolu says

Oba of Lagos, Rilwanu Akiolu

The Oba of Lagos, Rilwan Akiolu, on Wednesday said he would work to ensure corrupt people never lead Nigeria again.

Speaking at the inauguration of the Nigerian Women Against Corruption initiative in Lagos, Mr. Akiolu said he would work against any corrupt individual becoming Nigeria’s president again.

“I insist that this is not era for somebody who spent the first three years under the administration of President Olusegun Obasanjo making money and turning public corporations to his own,” Thisday newspaper quoted Mr. Akiolu as saying at the event.

“He is planning to come back to be the President of this country again. I’ll work against his ambition. I mean it and I mean it, by God’s grace, it shall not be so.”

Although he didn’t mention his name, Mr. Akiolu is believed to have been referring to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar for whom he has never hidden his disdain.

Mr. Abubakar served as vice president under ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo between 1999 and 2003.

Mr. Abubakar also presided over the National Council on Privatization, supervising the sale of dozens of government-owned enterprises to private individuals.

Last month, the Lagos monarch had accused Mr. Abubakar of being behind his forced exit from the Nigeria Police Force where he was retired as an Assistant Inspector General.

At an event organised by the Lagos State Ministry of Justice on January 30, Mr. Akiolu said Mr. Abubakar played a prominent role in convincing then president, Mr. Obasanjo, to retire him from service.
The former vice president denied the claims.

The monarch commended the government of Akinwunmi Ambode, the Lagos State governor, saying he had achieved a lot in less than two years

“If a man can achieve that much in office in under two years, it shows clearly that there is still hope for this country and whether we like it or not, we should thank God and commend Asiwaju Bola Tinubu.

“If I did not put down my foot from 1999 to 2003 to ensure that nobody pushed the government of Lagos State aside, they would have taken government from us that time.

“We will not be saying what we are saying today. That is why I am praying that God will let President Muhmmadu Buhari complete his tenure.”

    We don hear you oh!!
We will also ensure all CORRUPT Police officers that are now traditional leaders will be dethroned by God’s grace.
We must drown all corrupt leaders and Retired Policemen in the Lagos LAGOON, The Lord is our strength and will see us through.

    • Watch man

Thank you dear! The man thinks that because he is now called “oba” that people will easily forget his own brand of corruption all the way from his police days.

      • Ashibogu

His son was involved in Armed Robbery that was why he was retired in overriding public interest. Although he claimed the boy was not really his son but his love child. While not defending Atiku, Nigerians must be allowed to choose their leaders. What if Atiku has repented of all his mistakes? We remember what Murtala Mohammed did at CBN Bénin during the war and the impact his six month leadership had on our nation. Tinubu and co deceived the North and foisted Buhari on us so that they can get back power through the back doorway. Now, they have it and they are boasting today. Maybe they know what we do not know. Osibanjo will do well not to listen to the Oba and his cohorts lest a worse fate will befall him.

        • Watch man

The oba even took credit for ensuring that Tinubu govt was put in place. Remember that Osinbajo was Tinubu’s commissioner for justice and attorney general. The point is that, in the end it would be difficult for Osinbajo not to listen to the oba (either directly or by proxy). Just like someone said, it will take a tired, angry, dissatisfied and pressured people to get rid of the criminals that have held Nigeria hostage for too long.

        • Nuorah

My advice to Oba he should respect himself.

  • Watch man

Is it just to talk? Nigeria is a nation with a bunch of people with logorrhea. You should first rid yourself of the corruption that aided you to be where you are right now. When that is done then you can begin the corruption campaign, otherwise you will be confined to the lagoon.

Oba Akiolu might have a personal grudge against Mr.Atiku but he does have a point. Time has run out for the likes of Atiku to govern Nigeria. Nigeria has been very good to him and he’s served as VP for eight years. He’s now in his 70s and with the current state of Nigeria under Buhari, too old for the Presidency.
Turakin, time to call it a day for national office and step aside for the younger people to lead the country.

  • Isaac Azor

The Oba is correct. But this can be achieved only with great determination and sacrifice from the citizenry by not selling our votes but voting right and letting our votes to count.

    • Nuorah

Its only court that can says some one is corrupt not Oba

      • kinsly

Let Atiku travel to USA if he is not corrupt. Even for a day.

  • Baba Jada

The Obas word is self explanatory and i am sure no one wants corrupt people to lead them. My problem is with premium times editors who decided to conclude that it is Atiku. This is not only defamatory but its against the ethics of journalism. I think Atiku should take legal action against premium times. When you don’t want to abide by the rules you should be ready to receive the prescribed punishment.

    • So oju abe niko

You are flat out wrong. Apart from not mentioning the name, Akiolu made it very clear that he was referring to Atiku.

      • Baba Jada

by him saying that “I insist that this is not era for somebody who spent the first three
years under the administration of President Olusegun Obasanjo making
money and turning public corporations to his own,” isn’t specific. how many people made money under the Obasanjo regime? you cannot list them likewise so many people from that regime have contested for the presidency. The proper thing to do is to leave it to their audience to conclude.

        • Gary

Hope you know that truth is acknowledged as defence against defamation. So I have not defamed you if you have stolen and I call you a thief.

I doubt if Mr. Atiku wants to open a can of worms by suing anyone for defamation over his period in office. One more reason for him to shelve his presidential ambition. Too many forces have the knives out for him.

        • Ashibogu

Andy Uba made money under Obasanjo. Bought UBA.

          • Otile

Gbenga’s wife(Moji) made money, she got lucrative contracts, and a bouncing baby boy.

  • So oju abe niko

“That is why I am praying that God will let President Muhmmadu Buhari complete his tenure.” Akotileta Oba Akinolu, the king of riff raffs, conveniently forgot that he supported President Jonathan over Buhari. Not that there is anything wrong in supporting anyone for presidency, he shouldn’t begin to pretend that he was invested in Buhari all along.

  • Charles

Do you mean after this present corrupt leaders????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

  • Curtx Maccido

Why do we have so many crooks and hypocrites in Nigeria? this was the same police officer (some years back) who while in service never won any integrity award, he was made a king through corrupt process and leader, everything about and around him is so corrupt ….yet, he’s advocating corruption free leadership, doesn’t add-up!!! All the women sponsoring the program knew their husbands (sitting governors) were corrupt and some of them were used in stealing public funds – yet they are so bold to discuss anti-corruption. God why are you so generous with these human beings? Can’t you just help Nigerians by making these hypocrites dumb and blind for being deceitful?

  • George

Hear this yeye Lagoon fake Oba who his association with the most deadly and dubious man on earth earned him the Oba stool.

Atiku is corrupt in his blind eyes while TINUBU omo ole is a saint. Cowardice runs in Yorubas bloods.

    • Otile

He is not called mumu Oba for nothing.

  • tsunami1earthquake

The question is: why was he retired from the police? Did Atiku just grab him by the hand and recommended his forced retirement? I believe if everything were right with him Obasanjo would not have agreed to his forced retirement. The oba should just remain quiet on his throne and leave politics to politicians. Traditional rulers are not expected to take part in politics. But if he continued he might be shooting himself in the foot, as he has now told the story of his forced retirement.

  • CeeCee1818

I thought he was referring to Saraki. Is there anyone worse?

    • George

Yes Tinubu is worse the omo ole has no shame
