Gambia: How Tinubu’s jet was used to fly Yahya Jammeh to exile

The private jet used to ferry the disgraced former president of Gambia, Yahya Jammeh, was a chartered plane leased by the national leader of the All Progressives Congress, Bola Tinubu, PREMIUM TIMES has learnt.

A source close to Mr. Tinubu told PREMIUM TIMES that the VP-CBT Falcon Jet had been with Alpha Conde, the Guinean president, who is a close friend of the APC leader, before it was placed at Mr. Jammeh’s disposal.

“It was a chartered plane on lease used by Asiwaju (Mr. Tinubu), and it has been with his friend (Mr. Conde),” the source, who did not want to be named because he was not authorised to speak on the matter, said.

“It flew to Guinea (from Banjul), then to Equatorial Guinea with five people on board – Mr. Jammeh, his wife, mother, and son; and Mr. Conde.”

Reports emerged on Monday that the private jet used by Mr. Jammeh belonged to Mr. Tinubu.

According to The Nation newspaper, Mr. Jammeh was met with the problem of how to leave The Gambia after agreeing to relinquish power.

”The leaders reached out to All Progressives Congress (APC) stalwart Asiwaju Bola Tinubu who authorised his private aircraft to be used to fly Jammeh out of Banjul,” the newspaper quoted an unnamed source as saying.

“He reportedly gave a condition: it should only be used ‘if it will facilitate the quick exit of Jammeh and lead to the restoration of peace and democracy in The Gambia.'”

When contacted, Tunde Rahman, Mr. Tinubu’s spokesperson, declined to confirm or deny his principal’s ownership of the plane.

“We have no response to that,” Mr. Rahman told PREMIUM TIMES.

Mr. Jammeh, 51, who ruled The Gambia for 22 years had been embroiled in a power tussle after refusing to concede defeat – despite initially congratulating the winner – to Adama Barrow in a December 1 presidential election.

He eventually bowed to pressure and flew into exile on Saturday night.

Where did Tinubu get the money to buy a private jet? They don’t even hide anymore, they now openly flaunt their wealth.
    God help us.

  • Kennedy Ogba

So much for lopsided anti-corruption crusade. Taking all his $11m loot along in APC plane. any comments from Nigerians who vilified Jonathan and Oritsejafor? Those who thought we have found the right man in 2015 will need to have a rethink in 2019! The decampees from PDP are cowards threatened by APC to defect or be deflated by EFCC. It is not about APC performance or better ideology.

Tinubu has always been a wealthy individual. He was said to have almost personally sponsored the famous NADECO exiles during the infamous Abacha days. At least few of them confurmed this before politics torne them apart. He is also said to have been an executive of a major oil co. till the 80s. How does these compare with Oritsejafor? Please supply info.

      • Charlie

He was a mid level accountant of an oil company. His ex boss, Akinyelure was a local executive in Nigeria. If he has acquired wealth after leaving office he should let us know.

        • Ajayi Ifayemi

Hmm! I did not know that being the Treasurer of an oil company like Mobil is mid level accountant job. We learn everyday!

This is a better report. The number of passengers can be verified, the term given for the basis of aircraft deployment stated and the world was aware that Jammeh had no means to exit.
Those claiming that loot was taken aboard should show their proof. We should seek balanced reportage.

Tinubu as the governor of Lagos liberate OYO, OGUN, OSUN, EKITI after Obasanjo use federal resources to rig elections for the PDP . At that point Yoruba allows its resources to counter federal rigging machine. this political project was headed by Tinubu and was allowed to have the money to do it. The rest should be obvious. He did a good job and won a lot of admiration he was even compare to Chief Awolowo. He also spearhead the development of Lagos which subsequent well chosen governors followed.

Obasanjo deliver the south west to the his Northern sponsors angering the Yoruba who see him as a traitor. He has always claim to be more Northerner than the northerners to win favor and it reflects in its policy despite always using south west presidency slot to get to power. Majority of Yoruba are against PDP because it was corrupt and its south west governors achieve little or nothing in term of development.

Long story- so where on your narrated folk tale did you reflect on the points emphasized on the article a fore? But if this was a private airplane associated to say GEJ or his associates you all would have jumped and screamed for his head on silver platter- why is it that when it comes to the man whose lies and deceptions create the environment for these tyrannic administration you fall over with justification for his thievery ?

      • Rominiyis

You are misguided, where in it did I defend whatever you accused him of ? I wrote the ” The rest is obvious” but you can not interpret despite all the background information which you call folk tale because of your political naivety. Some of the money he uses was provided for political expediency and if you think he stole in addition you are free to proof your point.

Two wrongs does not make a right, its up to you to go after him same way you feel your idol is being ” wrongly” accused. With your mentality every corrupt individual would not have to account for anything and you will continue to suffer the consequences. Matter of fact no justice system can prosecute every offender, what is practical is to punish those caught to serve as deterrent.

Everybody can see that the Yorubas are behind the crisis in the Gambia. These people know how to destabilize a peaceful country. Right from the beginning their judges and lawyers crept into the small country and cooked up unworkable laws to destabilize the unsuspecting people. They incited Imam Buhari to invade the Gambia, hence Imam dispatched snipers, sharp shooters, a formidable warship capable of sinking the small country, and a cache of IEDs. Boy, you need to see the fierce-looking Munchi and Fulani sharp shooters in one convoy. As if that was not enough Tinubu provided logistics and a jumbo jet which Imam Jammeh used to cart away Gambian people’s government belongings. Now Barrow has to start from the beginning to rebuild what is left of the country.
