The newly elected governor of Ondo State, Rotimi Akeredolu, on Sunday thanked President Muhammadu Buhari and John Odigie-Oyegun, the APC national chairman, for their support.

In his victory speech he read at his Owo residence, minutes after he was declared winner, Mr. Akeredolu said his victory was not only for him and supporters of his party, APC, but for all the residents of Ondo State.

He thanked all governors and officials of the APC “who are loyal” to the party, in what might be a snipe at some APC governors who refused to campaign for him.

PREMIUM TIMES had reported how Governors Akinwunmi Ambode, Rauf Aregbesola and Abiola Ajimobi boycotted Mr. Akeredolu’s campaigns. A national leader of the APC, Bola Tinubu, also boycotted the campaign after he criticised the primary process that produced Mr. Akeredolu.

Mr. Akeredolu scored 244,842 votes to defeat 27 others in the governorship election held on Saturday.

Eyitatyo Jegede of the PDP came second with 150,380 votes while Olusola Oke of the AD scored 126,889 votes to come third, the INEC returning officer, Abdul-Ganiyu Ambali, said.

“By the grace of God, I will not fail you (people of Ondo State),” Mr. Akeredolu said in his speech.

This is more like a victory to President Buhari as his own political structure has triumphed over the party dissidents that refused to support Akeredolu. Congratulations Governor-Elect Akeredolu. Now that you have been elected, dust your blue brint for development of Ondo state and start mobilizing your team that will work with you. Campaign has ended and time for serious work if you plan to succeed.

    • SamPsalm

No, it is not. Buhari and party politics? That clearly is not something he is good at.

Akeredolu’s doggedness deserves some credit here. He won the primaries – warts and all. And he found a way to secure the legitimacy needed to get to the election still on the ballot while his PDP rival was running from pillar to post legally.

Buhari’s neutrality in some of these should be taken serious – by every serious minded person. Whatever may its drawback, it seems to be the principle he has decided to play by. Tinubu’s influence is still massive but there has never been a man in Nigeria’s history whose preferences were law when it comes to political party elections. Ondo State has just proved the point and if Akeredolu is smart, he will find a way to get along.

      • Aboutsomthing

Your wisdom , may it never run dry. You are absolutely on point especially on Buhari.

  • Babso

The word ‘ loyal governors’ in his acceptance is not necessary. He should be magnimous in victory by making statements that will unite the party than otherwise. Congratulations, it is a victory for APC.

    • KBE

No, he is now the executive governor elect. He can even order the arrest Tinubu, his boys and give them slaps to their faces.

      • Bob Asuo

Just like you used to slap your parents Ndi Ara

        • KBE

You know that is easily possible in your miserable culture. Ewu, Onye osi.

          • Bob Asuo

Whose culture is it to kick parents in the morning as a form of greetings? Third class citizen, Ewu, Oloriburuku, goat, barawo

          • KBE

This description fit perfectly your culture. Nkpi, were, ewure.

    • Great Nigeria

@ Babso, true and mature talk. by that statement, he is picking a fight with not only 4 governors but Asiwaju and that may not be health for the party

    • Iyanda

I thought so too. This is the time to move forward with both friends and foes.
I always wonder what breed our politicians are made of.

  • Debaptist

Congratulations to the Governor elect, now let’s wait for the verdict of the loud mouth from Ekiti.

  • Spoken word

The final nail has been nailed on Tinubu’s coffin.

    • Babso

Not really. Tinubu did not work against the party and still one of the APC leaders.

      • Spoken word

        Wake up and face reality

  • serubawon70

INEC appears to have murdered sleep if Fani Kayode is to be taken serious.

  • Aminu Baba

It is a big sigh of relief for us out here and very gladenning indeed to note that Ondo people did not behave like their Ekiti Neighbours. They showed the world how sophisticated they are by not allowing stomach infrastructure or any form of monetary inducement to play a part in their voting pattern. They are not “Professors state” for nothing.

This election, more than any other, should serve as a final warning to so-called godfathers and party leaders. They must come down from their high horses and allow democracy to prevail in the choice of their party’s candidates. The days of imposition should be over as it is now clear, from the trouncing of PDP and AD by APC, that the power now is really in the hand of the electorate. Thanks to the “lovely card reader”.

Another significant lesson to be learnt is that taught to perennial carpet crossers and unprincipled politicians who regard party politics as a business venture. It is sheer madness for someone to cross from LP to PDP then to APC and then to AD within a spate of four years! It is only in Nigeria that this kind of irresponsible behavior can be tolerated. Again, the people of Ondo state have delightfully demonstrated to the world that they are too matured to tolerate such type of greedy behavior from unruly candidates, backed by pompous sponsors

  • Ojeleye Iyiola

Thank God for this victory.God fatherism is dying in our politics gradually.Shame to….

    • Authority

If God fatherism is dying why did Oshiomole choose Godwin Obaseki to take over from him? Bcos we all knew that Obaseki is political Godson of Adam Oshiomole. Keep deceiving yourself.

  • delbod

It seems to me that those of you that are 5shouting Tinubu s name are politically immatured . Was it not the same Tinubu that supported Akeredolu 4 years ago when things are turf for this now ruling party (APC) to face the then ruling party (PDP ).
Tinubu must be commended to even bring Akeredolu to a political limelight.

Tinubu as an individual has every right as a Nigerian to support anyone to be a governor just like any other person.
You people should stop creating problems among the leaders.
In America, during the campaign ,a lot of Republican leaders ,including the house speaker (American no.3 citizen ) refused to campaign for Donald Trump, but when he won , they are all planning to work with him now because the people have spoken through their votes.
The only wisdom now is for the governor – elect to be magnimous enough to unify all factions in the party by carefully choosing his language.
Even Donald Trump as brash, as he was, is changing his language now as president -elect.
