A former chairman of the House Committee on Appropriation, Abdulmumin Jibrin, on Friday fired back at the Body of Principal Officers in the House over claims that his dismissal was informed by his alleged bungling of the 2016 budget, saying some of the lawmakers who signed the statement were coerced to do.
Mr. Jibrin said the development, which he alleged was orchestrated by Speaker Yakubu Dogara, was disgraceful.
“I heard on good authority that contrary to what was brandished in the media as resolution of the meeting, the whole session was an extension of the grand disgraceful plan by Speaker Dogara and the three other Principal Officers to coerce the other members of the body of Principal Officers to come out in their defence since the Speaker and the three others know very well that they are on their way to jail,” Mr. Jibrin’s said in a series of updates on his Twitter handle Friday night.
Ten lawmakers, under the aegis of Body of Principal Officers, House of Representatives, said on Thursday that Mr. Jibrin was removed because his official malfeasance had become unbearable for the National Assembly and executive, and consequently took full responsibility.
“The decision to relieve the erstwhile Appropriation Chairman of his position was a collective decision of the leadership in response to unrelenting pressures from the overwhelming majority of Honorable Members who were irked by the former Chairman’s gross abuse of the budget process,” the lawmakers said.
The 10 lawmakers who signed the statement included, Mr. Dogara; his deputy, Lasun Yusuf; Majority Leader, Femi Gbajabiamila; Deputy Majority Leader, Buba Jibril; House Whip, Ado Doguwa and Deputy Chief Whip, Pally Iriase.
Political analysts said Mr. Gbajabiamila’s decision to publicly rally behind Mr. Dogara in the budget padding row marked a significant setback for Mr. Jibrin’s war against some principal officers.
But Mr. Jibrin said he recognised the ‘desperate’ tactics of Mr. Dogara, which he said were aimed at getting him to implicate more political heavyweights while abandoning the thrust of his campaign against the Speaker and others.
“They want to drag as many people as possible into the matter to use it as a shield or create a situation that in their foolish thinking will compel me to implicate the six other Principal Officers or other people in National Assembly or the executive,” Mr. Jibrin said. “They are obviously looking for co-traveller. You can see the pattern of systematic blackmail desperately trying to drag in the Executive and the Senate. I’m just too strong for them. They need more forces to fight Hon. Jibrin!”
Mr. Jibrin, APC-Kano, has been locked in media and political battle with Mr. Dogara and other lawmakers since he was announced removed as House Appropriation Committee chair on July 20.
