A 44-year-old man, Deji Babington-Asaye, was on Tuesday arraigned before Chief Magistrate’s Court in Abeokuta for calling the senator representing Ogun East, Buruji Kashamu, “a drug baron and jail breaker” on WhatsApp group.

The prosecuting counsel, Sunday Eigbejiale, told the court that the accused committed the offence between March 13 and 14 at about 2:30pm at Ogere, Remo in Ogun State magistrate district.

He said the accused, a member of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, made the comments on a party support group on WhatsApp.

The prosecutor said the accused engaged in an act that threatens the peace of the state by insulting a federal lawmaker in the group tagged “PDP March to Victory”.

According to him, the accused called Mr. Kashamu a “drug baron and jail breaker”, and also challenged the senator to go to United States of America and clear this name.

The prosecutor said Mr. Babington-Asaye committed an offence contrary to and punishable under section 249 (d) of the Criminal Code Cap 29 Vol.11 laws of Ogun State of Nigeria, 2006.

The accused however pleaded not guilty to the one-count charge of breaching public peace preferred against him.

The defense counsel, Bola Oluwole, said the offence was bailable and asked the court to grant his client bail.

The chief magistrate, Oriyomi Ogunfowora, therefore granted the accused bail in the sum of N250, 000 with two sureties in like sum.

The court adjourned the matter till March 30.

Nigerians will pick one or two lessons from this story, No one is a criminal until the court of law pronounced it.

    • Otile

What two lessons are Nigerians learning from Kashamu, an astute Yoruba lawmaker; to be a drug baron or to be a jail breaker?

  • Basketmouth

Is the police going mad? Why should someone be arranged for verbal assault? I think this is ordinary civil case not criminal. Our police department doesn’t have much to do. Kashamu should just go to court and sue for deformation of character. This is not a police case.

    • Dodondawa

Believe me they know exactly what they are doing. They have taken some money from Kashamu. By arresting and prosecuting the guy they are sending message to the little guys in Nigeria that they can not mess with Kashamu. The police are shameless thieves. The guy has not committed any crime, let Kashamu go to civil court and sue him for damages.

I don’t think we should use abusive language to address elderly person who can born us.
Is appropriate for anybody bcoz of freedom of speech to misuse that power anyhow.?
When someone continue to misbehave to elderly person by calling him all sorts of names, he must make as a scape goat for others to learn from it.
Senator Kashamu didn’t have any grudginglys with anybody except u overrude to him.

    • Otile

Kashamu should not be excused simply because he is a loyal supporter of Buhari. He is indeed a drug baron and jail breaker.

    • ayo

Kashamu Buruji is a known felon and can be called such until he clears his name. As long as he doesn’t present himself to the authorities looking for him, the assumption is that he is guilty of being a DRUG BARON running from justice.

  • EdunEmma5050

Afterall he was just invited for interrogation, bcoz of misconduct to and elderly person. if Senator Kashamu arrest him, he won’t have access to anything.
It’s just a lesson to those who are always rude to an elderly person.

  • Chuks

Maybe the guy meant pharmaceutical drugs. Why is Kashamu’s mind always on hard drugs? Because he is a drug baron and fugitive.

  • delta K

Yoruba drug baron! Now do your worst, Ole Kashamu

  • UOU

But Obasanjo called him drug baron, even wrote it in black and white, why did they not arraign obasanjo? evil people, no wonder kashamu is now campaigning for buhari, he is a clean man, suddenly

  • dubya

So defamation is now a crime in Nigeria, next they will criminalize social media comments. Kashamu is a drug baron, a cocaine carrier and a jail breaker, oya, let him come and arrest me.

    • Otile

They are only protecting him because he is an arch Buhari loyalist.

      • Patriotique

@Otile sometimes I dey wonda how many nuts loose for ur head. Abi, na Nya$h u use to think. U need the whole host of haven to heal u, desperately. Pls, don’t respond wit insults. I’m sincerely doing u a favour!
