Court adjusts Metuh’s bail condition

Olisa Metuh

A Federal High Court has adjusted the conditions for bail granted the spokesperson for the Peoples Democratic Party, Olisa Metuh.

Mr. Metuh, who is being prosecuted for allegedly receiving N400 million arms money, has been in detention since his arrest over three weeks ago.

A court granted him bail on a N400 million bond, and N200 million each from two sureties.

The court also said the two sureties must have properties within the Maitama area of Abuja.

On Wednesday, Justice Okon Abang, who gave the initial order, said assets from other parts of Abuja would also be accepted.

He advised Mr. Metuh to appeal if he was not satisfied with the conditions.

Stupd judge. You want to help Buhari bring decree 2&4 through the back door. How can a reasonable person set impossible bail conditions that cannot be met.

What is most important is to convict the accused and then jail him maximum time allowed plus refund of the stolen money. You have not convicted someone and you’re already punishing him.

The shocking thing is that people from certain ethnic groups don’t see the madness of this judge and infact applauding it.

As I said last week, if this kind of irresponsibility is allowed, another party could win election next time and set impossible conditions for Osibanjo or Fashola or any other person for that matter….and those cheerleaders will blame Arthur Nzeribe as usual.

Buhari will still win the next election. The condition given for Metuhs’ bail is not impossible, just that no one is ready to come forward.

    • Wale

Did your Arthur Nzeribe partook in what you have in mind or not?
The problem with you guys is “cherry-picking”. you go around picking on what you think favors just you, but half of the time you’re wrong.
You are here blabbing about “certain ethnic groups’ but forgot that a member of this certain group (Justice Ademola) a Yoruba judge, grants Your Terrorist Director Unconditional bail.

      • Arabakpura

How did you tell the “certain” ethnic group without being a witch or a wizard!

        • Wale

Don’t ever skip taking your meds. on time as directed by your care giver.

          • Arabakpura

I thought I spoke to a human! Sorry!

        • Julius

          By reading their bullshit trash.

  • Dazmillion

Metuh should just plead guilty and get this over with.

  • Wale

Hard to meet bail conditions is also a miscarriage of justice of the highest order, but on the other hand, here you have an accuse that refuses to refund a Naira even when when the investigation clearly shows that the money was lodge in his account.

I don’t know why average Nigerian cannot think critically. What this judge can do to help the fight against corruption is to expedite hearing of the case. If Metuh is convicted, he would be at the mercy of the judge because he can decide to impose maximum and punitive jail terms and conditions on Metuh. Telling an accused to bring Jesus and Mohamed as sureties is just damaging the judicial system because of the precedence it sets.

But like 99% of Nigerian with very poor critical thinking training and education, the judge is behaving true to kind.

These bail conditions are largely unconstitutional. The guarantee provided by the constitution is that every accused is innocent until proven guilty. By setting unattainable bail conditions the Judge and the judiciary in general are breaching that very important aspect of the constitution which is superior to any judicial precedent or laws passed by parliament. For, if the man is assumed innocent why then do you set these outrageous bail conditions. The court can ask for his Passport to be deposited with the Court Registrar if it thinks the accused will jump bail. We are gradually bringing the worst of the American Justice system into Nigeria. I really fear for my country, because this pressure that the APC government is building up will definitely lead to a serious explosions at so point. People can only tolerate this things for a short time. Gen. Buhari should remember that these were the same things he did ibetween1983-85 that led to many celebrating his ouster.

No one fights criminality with criminality. Yes almost all Nigerians welcome a thorough fight against corruption, but it must be done within the framework of extant law, any deviation from the dictates of rule of law, equity and good conscience in the fight, will only be counterproductive.

It would have been better if Buhari should had used his maximum power to set up military tribunals, which are not expected to grant bail to the accused to prosecute this war. The impossible bail conditions set by these seeming browbeaten judges truly makes mockery not only of the judiciary but the government.
How can an accused (presumed innocent) have his bank accounts and properties confiscated and yet given impossible bail conditions by a court of law on bailable offense?

  • Say the truth

Sanni that was alleged to have stolen 1 billion was given a bail of 100 million but our referred justice Okon Abang gave a bail of 800million for an alleged offense of 400million. The name of Okon Abang has gone into the book of records as the judge who set this precedent. It may be difficult to say, maybe this is another intergrity challenged challantan. The judge should do the needful and reverse the ridiculous bail if his pride will allow him to do so.

  • Dantizo

Why these wailing? I remembered the learned defence council, boasted that the bailing conditions can be met, dressing that the conditions are mere admistrative procedure, he even added that a lot of friend are out there waiting to surety for methu, why now seeking variation of same bailing conditions, may be the expected volunteers have a rethink having realize the consequences of their potential action.
The good thing is that Buhari administration is at least doing something about anti curruption even though waillers are saying it is one sided. Let APC do the. Part that favours them, when another party comes in they will continue by cleaning where this regime speared.
If GEJ did his own the work would have been less for GMB by now.
