Former Minister denies fleeing to Dubai, owning property there

Former Transport Minister, Senator Idris Umar

A former Minister of Transport in the immediate past administration of President Goodluck Jonathan, Idris Umar, has denied media reports suggesting that he has properties in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

Mr. Umar also denied stories that he had relocated to the gulf nation and was taking refuge there.

President Muhammdu Buhari had during his recent to the UAE, signed a number of bilateral agreements with the government of the UAE, one of which will see Nigerians who looted the nation’s resources losing them to the federal government.

Dubai is a choice location for Nigerian officials who stash away public funds there, investing in top-of-the-range properties.

One of the agreements signed between Nigeria and the UAE will facilitate the deportation of people suspected of stealing from the nation’s treasury and also the repatriation of ill-gotten wealth.

Following the agreements, which, analysts say, have caused panic among the Nigerian elite, Mr. Umar was named in media reports among those likely to be affected.

The former Minister, however, said in a release issued issued by his media aide, Innocent Ebirim, that the former Senator “does not own any property in Dubai and he is in Abuja at his usual place of abode and has no reason whatsoever to hide in faraway Dubai”.

Which transport ministry was this man minister? Never heard of this name before! These nonentities who either did not believe in the government they served or had the capacity to make any impact in that ministry. This man’s achievement was transporting his children to school.

    • Julius

lolz. I bet he got paid by the government of Jonathan doing that.

    • Maria

He was there to compliment the quota…and eat national cake, sorry, yam!

    • Lawrence Agha

‘Transporting his children to school’ That’s a good one!

    • Wale Adegoke

Stop advertising ignorance. Senator Idris Umar was an elected member of the House of Reps between 1999-20007. Again elected Senator by the same good people of Gombe State. A man of impeccable integrity, honesty and steadfast morality. An astute legal practitioner of no mean repute devoid of any form of controversy.

  • No need for him to panic, investigations are going on and it is being reported that a list containing the name of politicians with properties in the UAE would be out before 31st March. I expect the EFCC to take actions as at when due.

  • Maitama Tambari.

Liar as usual. Your time is coming. It will come. You have forgotten the compromise you have made in your capacity in charge of Ports.

    • nija pikin

The truth is, he is not lieing at all i personally saw him in abuja last week in the jumaat prayer and i think he is one of the few honest jonathan ministers that have nothing to hide and he did very well in his ministry am saying this not bcos of any motive but bcos its simply the truth i believe i shouldnt keep quiet when everyone is saying the wrong thing.

      • Buhari4Ever

Deri Orbuka, you saw him at Abuja from your hiding place in Yenegoa? May God punish your crooked fingers for life.

      • tundemash

What exactly did he do very well at the Ministry ? Why did he not call a press conference so journalist see him in flesh? Was it not in this same country Ojo Madueke told us he ate pounded yam with Yaradua even though Yaradua was dead already ? I beg Umar dey Dubai and he will be smoked out !

  • Maria

Hahahahahahahah he is in abuja at his usual place…lol! You are hiding in Dubai…you guys better return like Nduka Obaigbena before you are declared wanted!

  • Nkem

They always don’t have reason to hide until they begin to have tonnes of reasons to hire a battery of very expensive SANs with money that cannot come from their legitimate earnings, if they ever had one. Then they would begin to come to court in wheelchairs and asking to be given bail to travel to Dubai to treat their ulcers.

  • hard soff

With so much clout and benefit of presence, instead of a press release, the former minister would have done himself a bunch of good by calling a press conference.
The news hounds would have been there to see him, ask him questions, and debunk (at least) the alleged flight to Dubai or wherever..

    • share Idea

Instead of you to reprimand SR for the sensational news reporting, you’re advising the minister to call press conference even after reading this release. APC and their supporters will keep fishing for stories to sell to their gullible fans in a bid to paint a larger than life image for Buhari.

      • hard soff

I found (and I still don’t find) no reason to reprimand SR for this reportage. The report isn’t an opinion of SR. Sahara Reporters reported what it saw as news.
If SR had not reported what the former minister’s media aide said, people could have insinuated that they were suppressing information favorable to the former minister.
The moment we allow media outlets to filter out information that are otherwise considered relevant by opposing parties, the much touted democracy would be on its way to a self imposed somnambulism.

Everybody in the GEJ administration must not be corrupt. I know for sure that Sen Idris Umar worked very hard to resuscitate NRC and small wonder, Rotimi amaechi confessed that he did not know that the Railway sector is working. Are we aware that our Inland waterways are experiencing a boom due to the dredging during his era. He ensured that the Nigerian Shippers Council was made the port regulator as there had never been any. Pls let us be objective in our assessment of our fellow human being. The elections are over, we must concentrate on finding ways to boost our revenue which will enable us meet the deliverables in the 2016 budget.
