Biafra: Court sets date for decision on Nnamdi Kanu’s bail

Nnamdi Kanu

A Federal High Court in Abuja will on Thursday rule on a bail application for the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, who has been in detention since October.

Mr. Kanu, the director of the underground Radio Biafra, was arrested by the State Security Service.

Calls for his release led to demonstrations in several south east states.

On Monday, the counsel to the SSS, Moses Idakwo, asked that the court to disregard the bail application by Mr. Kanu’s counsel, Vincent Obeta.

Mr. Idakwo argued that Mr. Kanu should not be granted bail as the charge against him was terrorism-related.

He said the SSS had evidence of bank accounts owned by Mr. Kanu, where monies (in dollars and pound sterling) were used for financing terrorism against Nigeria.

Mr. Idakwo told the court that Mr. Kanu had dual citizenship of Britain and Nigeria and therefore could flee justice, if granted bail.

He also said the bail conditions issued by a magistrate court were still yet to be perfected by Mr. Kanu.

But Mr. Kanu’s counsel, Mr. Obeta, dismissed the arguments of the SSS as being speculative.

He told the court that his client had long offered to meet the financial requirement by the Abuja Geographical Information System (AGIS) for ascertaining the authenticity of the properties belonging to the surety, but that his offer was rejected by the SSS.

Mr. Obeta told the court that the SSS had on four occasions flouted the order of the magistrate court, adding that an order had since been given for his client’s release, on bail.

He said the request by the SSS to further detain Mr. Kanu for another 90 days, according to section 27 of the Terrorism Prevention Act, was a negation of his client’s right.

Mr. Obeta also said his client had been in detention for 90 days, as at Monday.

Justice Adeniyi Ademola, who seemed quite unfamiliar with the case, said he would look into the matter and would issue a ruling Thursday.

I’m on the opinion that, The young man should be released. SSS or DSS do not have any meaningful evidence yet. Therefore, he must and should be released, if really Nigerian government want other’s to obey the law. I can’t understand why he was granted bail and still in detention. If Nigerian government are scared to bail him, then they should set him free and work with him.
Any misrule on this case might take Nigeria years to recover. We are yet recovered from the past civil war and we want to go into another problem. He should be released, I know my advice and opinion doesn’t count but i must speak out for peace to rain. Enough of all this intimidation from DSS and SSS.

DSS should not release Nnamdi Kanu. His arrest and detention has given life and publicity to Biafra struggle, his continuous detention is even fuelling this quest for Biafra restoration and making Kanu more popular than Buhari himself. Releasing Kanu is at the interest of Nigerian Government not Biafrans. On Biafra we stand!

How can you call a leader of ipob that register all over 89 countries in the world terrorist I think Nigeria is insane I think the world will now see that Nigeria is really a joke any holding kanu have make it easy for biafra restoretion the more you hold him the more biafra is close

  • TAWANDA INCOMMUNICADO

Nigerian security agencies are exposing themselves to the world. The real terrorists are in the Sambisa and the army cannot remove them but they are going about seeking phantom terrorists and civilians to jail and kill.

  • DE KING

DSS, lol! This guys r monkeys n baboons! U don’t hv a case! Just let Nnamdi go!

  • Don_C

Honestly it would appear that the DSS is filled with people that are ignorant or ill informed. A DSS person is saying the have evidence of bank accounts used in sponsoring terrorism. This clearly shows that we have people that are not qualified in the DSS. Please ask them which terrorism he is sponsoring?

  • Cleartruth

Buhari and his hausa dss people are bunch of confused illiterates. Can they show Nigerians the bank account in question and the terrorist attacks so far? This level of ignorance by dss is one of the reasons why biafrans want to be on their own. In biafra We want to develop a civilised society which Africa can be proud of. You don’t have any case against nnamdi kalu and you went and arrested him . Even when court has granted him bail , you refused to release him. What kind of animal Kingdom is nigeria!

You guys know what to do: go and demonstrate.

  • Oke

Nnamdi Kanu should be prosecuted and made apologize for calling Nigeria ‘a zoo’. A country which those of us who r not agitating for a break-up or secession still love and call our home. The born bastard Nnamdi Kanu has abused his freedom of speech for not only utering hate but also insultive and provocative speech and destabilizing the peace of the nation.
